WasteAid walk to crisscross London bridges

By 18/06/2018News

With only five days to go until this year’s WasteAid walk, on June 23, more than 120 people are to take part and walk 15.5 miles in London to raise awareness against marine plastics, writes Sarah Horton.

The walk, which includes crisscrossing over 16 bridges over the Thames, starts near Putney Bridge in West London. The route is then east towards the City, in a route zigzagging across the bridges.  Last year the walk saw Scafell conquered and the previous year walkers reached the top of Mount Snowdon.

On this year’s walk lunch will be a picnic at Vauxhall City Farm with finish line in Southwark past Tower Bridge. The walk ends in St John’s Churchyard with a recycled 3D printed souvenir medal, supplied by Singular MARS, given out to participants. Snacks at the finishing line will be provided by sponsors Wood, and supplied by DayOld using food that would otherwise have been wasted.

Two walk options

The organisers have emphasised there is still time to take part and said that if 15 miles is considered too much, they would welcome people joining the walk at lunchtime with six miles to go. The walks’ estimated time is 5 to 6 hours.

Walk for WasteAid organiser, Sally Talbot said: “We are looking forward to meeting old friends and new at the biggest ever ‘Walk for WasteAid’. It’s easy to sign up and everyone is welcome to join us and have some fun. We’ll be doing a litter pick along the way and providing refreshments at the start, middle and finish line. It’s a beautiful route along the river and through historic parts of London, and not to be missed!”

“Our research has shown that people want to do something to prevent plastic reaching the oceans.”

As a sponsor of the 2018 walk, the letsrecycle.com team is also taking part! Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com said, “WasteAid is the charity of the waste management sector, and our support helps them share recycling skills around the world. The marine plastics crisis is a sign of our times and WasteAid are really doing something about it.”

Marine plastics

This year’s walk’s theme of marine plastics has been chosen because WasteAid is organising recycling projects for plastics in low-income countries.

WasteAid CEO Mike Webster said: “Our research has shown that people want to do something to prevent plastic reaching the oceans. By setting up community-based plastic recycling enterprises around the world, WasteAid is actively stopping plastic pollution, and creating green jobs in the process.”

“It’s not too late to sign up! Burn some calories and save the planet at the same time!” says Mike Webster. Signing up to the Walk for WasteAid is easy and only takes a couple of minutes (sign up HERE). WasteAid has also created tools and support for fundraisers to help people attract sponsorship from their friends and colleagues.
