WasteAid London bridges walk raises over £5,000

By 25/06/2018News

VIDEO REPORT: The 2018 WasteAid UK annual walk, held last weekend (23 June) raised around £5,000 for the charity’s work, according to a delighted chief executive Mike Webster.

And, WasteAid UK, which provides waste management skills to developing countries to improve livelihoods, is soon to announced new overseas projects working with the Department for International Development.

This year’s walk is the third organised by the charity and saw more than 100 people walk along the River Thames crisscrossing across all the bridges.

The walk provided a huge contrast to prevent events, which saw Snowdon climbed and Scafell conquered. This year walkers had to face the hurdle of crowded pavements and steps up and down to the bridges, as well as diversions imposed because of an ‘anti-Brexit’ march taking place in London.

Across the sector

Walkers came from across the recycling and waste sector including from local authorities, Resource Futures, Ricardo, Defra, WRAP, Valpak, Eunomia, Dsposal, universities and the waste industry.

Starting early in the day at Putney, lunch was held by the Vauxhall City Farm with the finishing line close to Tower Bridge. The total length of the walk was around 15 miles. The walk ended in St John’s Churchyard near Tower Bridge with a recycled 3D printed souvenir medal, supplied by Singular MARS, given out to participants. Snacks at the finishing line were provided by sponsor Wood, and supplied by DayOld using food that would otherwise have been wasted. letsrecycle.com sponsored the teeshirts.
