Derbyshire-based Ward Recycling has opened a dedicated deep sea export dock facility at Associated British Ports (ABP) in Immingham.
Ward Recycling, which is involved in metal recycling and waste management, said the deep-sea facility will enable the shipping of metal cargo to global destinations. The Immingham site was officially opened on 3 April.
Thomas Ward, project manager at the company, which has its headquarters in Swadlincote, explained that the Immingham site will help Ward Recycling both to reach new destinations and better serve existing customers.
Mr Ward said: “This is a major development for Ward and it will open up new destinations and customers for us for buying and selling scrap metal, such as Turkey, as well as helping us better serve our existing customers in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. “
He added that Turkey is one of the largest markets for scrap metal due to rebar production used in construction and manufacturing, and noted that the company will now be able to “ship metal in bulk from our own deep sea export terminal”.
Logistics
The Immingham port, located on the south bank of the Humber Estuary near Grimsby, also plays a large role in distribution and logistics within the North Sea and Scandinavian container trades.
Mark Frith, ABP port manager for Grimsby and Immingham said: “We’re extremely pleased to be able to welcome Ward onto the port estate in Immingham. We look forward to working closely with their team to progress and hopefully enhance their new project.”
With a turnover in excess of £120 million Ward Recycling claims to be the largest independent metal and waste recycling company in the East Midlands, with four sites in Derbyshire. The family-firm was established in the 1940s, specialising in the recycling of ferrous metals in Woodville near Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire and now has an annual turnover in excess of £120 million, employing more than 250 people.
