An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that broke out at Viridor’s plastics recycling facility in Rochester , Kent, last Week (27 May).
The Kent Fire and Rescue Service said that ten fire engines arrived at the scene at the industrial estate on Clipper Close at 2.29am and tackled the fire on the first floor of the Viridor building wearing breathing apparatus. The facility remains closed.
A spokesperson from the service confirmed to letsrecycle.com that “the cause is yet to be determined” and is still under investigation.
Six fire engines remained at the scene to dampen down the fire’, before handing he scene back to Vridor at 11:20.

There were no reported injuries.
A Viridor spokesperson said: “A fire was reported at Viridor’s Rochester Plastics Recycling Facility in Kent at 2.15am on Wednesday, 27 May, 2020.

“Viridor staff alerted Kent Fire & Rescue Service and immediately implemented site safety procedures, evacuating the plant. There were no injuries and the fire service had extinguished the fire two hours later at 4.15am, remaining on site to monitor the situation.
“The cause of the fire is being investigated. Viridor is grateful to Kent Fire & Rescue Service, which initially had 10 fire engines at the plant, for its assistance. Viridor had tankers at the recycling facility to collect and remove any liquid associated with fire-fighting efforts.
“The plastics recycling plant will remain closed for the time being to allow the company to assess the damage.”
