Veolia worker dies after falling ill in Croydon

A male collection crew member working for Veolia in South London, died after being taken ill on a collection round on 25 July.

The man in his 40s was working in Thornton Heath, Croydon, when he was taken ill ‘without warning’, Veolia confirmed. This happened at around 1.30pm, and he was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where he died later that evening.

His identity and cause of death have yet to be revealed. An inquest has yet to be opened the South London Coroner’s office has confirmed today.

Veolia carries out collections for Croydon through its partnership with the South London Waste Partnership

The death happened on what was the hottest day of the year, a connection which has been highlighted by local media, although no formal link between the heat and the fatality has been made.

Incident

Commenting on the incident, a spokesperson for Veolia, said: “We can confirm a member of our collection team, in their 40s, was taken ill without warning at around 1.30pm in Thornton Heath, Croydon on Thursday 25 July.

“An ambulance was called immediately and he was taken to St Georges Hospital for treatment where he died later that evening. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed to us. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

When approached by letsrecycle.com a Croydon council spokesman added: “We are sorry to hear of the death of a Veolia operative on Thursday 25 July. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
