Bromley council and Veolia have signed renewed contracts for waste services in the south east London borough, for a period of up to 16 years.
The deal is structured in three parts, with Veolia being contracted to carry out waste disposal, waste collection and street cleaning services for the council, from April 2019. Contracts have been signed for an initial eight-year period, up to 2027, with an option to extend by an additional eight years.

The new contracts extend a long-term relationship between the council and the waste and resources company which began in 2001 and expires at the end of this month.
Veolia was the sole bidder for the collection and street cleansing portions of the contract but had faced rival bids from Suez and Cory for the waste disposal element of the work.
A separate contract has been signed between the council and idverde for parks and grounds maintenance services. In total the contracts are worth up to £520 million over their 16-year lifespan.
Service
According to the council, the contracts are designed to “continue delivering high performing services whilst providing value for money to the council and council taxpayers”, with Bromley currently recycling or composting around 48% of the waste collected from householders.
The council’s waste service involves a separate weekly food waste collection, alternate-weekly collections of twin-stream dry recyclables, with paper and card collected one week and tins, plastics and glass the next, and a fortnightly collection for refuse.
Residual waste from the council is sent to the South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP) facility at Lewisham.

“Whilst these latest contract agreements are significant, it is also very much business as usual and residents shouldn’t suddenly notice any change in our services. I am very pleased that these agreements will help us further improve our waste management performance and divert even more away from expensive landfill disposal options as well as improve our recycling services. In addition to these contractors offering a good level of service they also offer excellent value for money for residents.”
