New fleet for Kettering & Corby
Contract hire and fleet management company Specialist Fleet Services Ltd (SFS), will be providing a fleet of 35 vehicles for Kettering borough council and Corby borough council for their new merged service.

The refuse trucks, recycling vehicles, sweepers, tipper trucks and transit vans are due for delivery on 2 February 2019.
SFS has been Kettering borough council’s vehicle partner for over 15 years and is now set to continue working with the Authority for an additional 9 years. There are two years remaining on the current 7-year contract, which comprises vehicle provision, maintenance and workshop management, and this has been extended for a further 7 years, SFS said.

South Tyneside opts for Mercedes Econics
South Tyneside council has invested in 16 Mercedes-Benz Econic refuse trucks for its waste collection service.

The Econic 2630 chassis were supplied by North East dealer Bell Truck and Van, then fitted by specialist municipal bodybuilder Farid Hillend Engineering, of Dunfermline, with waste compactors and bin lifting equipment.
The 6×2 chassis are powered by Euro VI, 220 kW (299 hp) 7.7-litre engines paired with six-speed Allison automatic transmissions, and have rear-steer axles for optimum manoeuvrability. Farid Hillend Engineering fitted either PowerLink single-compartment or TwinTrak split bodies. The trucks’ Terberg lifters are electrically powered.
Councillor Nancy Maxwell, lead member for area management and community safety at South Tyneside council, said: “Not only will the introduction of ‘greener’, more efficient vehicles help to save money for the Council in annual vehicle maintenance costs, but it will also provide our workforce with the tools and equipment they need to ensure reliable and efficient services for residents.”
Mick George takes delivery of two DAF trucks
Mick George Ltd, based in Peterborough, has taken delivery of two DAF FAD CF 400 refuse collectors, supplied by Ford & Slater Peterborough.

Custom built for waste collection, both CF trucks are fully FORS compliant and come with a number of DAF safety features, including nearside direct view passenger door window, rear and dash cameras, hard-drive recorders and cycle scanners.
These features were specified by Mick George Ltd when ordering the new vehicles, for operation in urban areas.
The trucks also feature an 8×4 rigid chassis which is designed to fit with the Farid Hillend Engineering front end loader body. Both trucks come fitted with an ZF Traxon automatic 12-speed gearbox, powered by the new PACCAR MX11 engine, and benefit from a full maintenance package from Ford & Slater Peterborough.
Grundon invests in vehicle safety
Oxfordshire-based waste management firm Grundon has fitted a new lighting system to its vehicle fleet for improved visibility during night-time work.
Banksman automatically lights up in reverse – illuminating up to 30 square metres
Designed and supplied by Labcraft, the Banksman light is positioned on each side of the chassis and produces a bright carpet of light around the vehicle when reverse gear is engaged.
“So far we’ve fitted the Banksman to 130 trade-waste vehicles and front-end loaders,” said the company’s regional operations manager Anthony Tattersall. “They operate at around 100 locations per day and often in poor light or darkness, where they are reversing up to 70% of the time.”
According to Labcraft, the Banksman projects a white light at a 90-degree angle from the vehicle sides onto the surrounding area and illuminates up to 30 square metres. The high-intensity Cree LED lamp is waterproof, hard wearing and guaranteed by Labcraft for 10 years.
