LSS Waste invests in cyclist safety system
Leeds-based engineering firm, SM UK, has won a £250,000 contract to install its HALO cyclist safety system across a fleet of 75 trucks for LSS Waste.
LSS Waste, also based in Leeds, provides skip hire and waste services predominantly in Yorkshire and also UK wide.
After winning an initial project to install the system across 25 of its vehicles in 2017, the new contract will see SM UK’s HALO package, which incorporates live recorded CCTV, rolled out across the whole LSS Waste fleet.

According to SM UK, its HALO system is designed to “correct the blindspot” that can cause collisions between cyclists and HGVs, particularly when a large vehicle makes a left turn.
“It’s a stressful and difficult job being an HGV driver so anything we can do to remove that stress, and of course to help make the roads safer, is beneficial,” said Nigel Woolford, managing director of LSS Waste. “The feedback we have had from the team as we have rolled HALO out across the fleet has been brilliant. “
SM UK’s HALO system includes sensors fitted to the near side of the truck, activated when a cyclist or vehicle enters its detection zone. Audio and visual warnings are also triggered when the vehicle signals to turn left, and an in-cab monitor provides the driver with 360 degree vision.
A1 Services relaunches skip hire business
A1 Services (Manchester) has relaunched its skip hire business and invested in plant and machinery.
The family-run company has invested in an 80 meter picking line and trommel, and other ancillary equipment at its 13-acre recycling site in Salford. The picking line and trommel were installed by manufacturing firm, Kenny & Co, based in North Lincolnshire.

Other investments include 500 new skips and 15 DAF chain skip trucks with the A1 Services Manchester livery.
“Over recent months our company have received ever increasing requests from our customers to once again provide chain skip hire,” a spokesperson for A1 Services said. “We have been informed and it appears that when we previously discontinued the chain skips service we left a huge service gap in the Greater Manchester area.“
According to A1 Services, for over 50 years the company has been dealing with the off-site disposal of hazardous, non-hazardous and inert soils. Other services offered by the firm include, tipper hire, grab hire container hire and waste clearance.
TOMRA introduces AUTOSORT COLOR for glass
TOMRA Sorting Recycling has introduced AUTOSORT COLOR – a unit which works in combination with AUTOSORT LASER to separate glass from municipal solid waste (MSW).

According to TOMRA, AUTOSORT COLOR achieves purity rates of greater than 95% at high throughput rates, “even when input materials are wet, dusty or dirty”.
AUTOSORT COLOR enables sorting operations to extract glass from the MSW stream for resale. It also reduces the risk of disruption, downtime and repair costs arising from damage to components when glass ends up in sorting machines that are not intended for glass, TOMRA says.
AUTOSORT COLOR is designed to recover a minimum of 80% of glass from MSW, with at least 95% of the recovered glass to be of a saleable quality. These targets were “consistently met” at four facilities in Germany and Spain, the company says, including one which separates up to 3,000 tonnes of glass annually. This process used a two-machine sorting process, first using AUTOSORT LASER and then AUTOSORT COLOR.
Mick George expands trade waste fleet
Cambridgeshire-based waste operator, Mick George Ltd, has expanded its commercial collection service with two ‘state-of-the-art’ refuse vehicles equipped with the latest safety and weighing technology.

The vehicles have been provided on 3-year contract hire with a full maintenance package by Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) from its RediTruck range of ‘off the shelf’ refuse trucks.
The two 26T DAF CF Olympus with BETA trade lifts were supplied liveried, and fitted with the PeoplePanel side guard protection system and AMCS weighing system.
Commenting on RVS’ preventable maintenance support package, Abigail Johnson, head of commercial waste, Mick George Ltd said: “RVS engineers visit our premises every 6 weeks to inspect and service the vehicles. We work our vehicles hard and deliver an extensive daily service across our operating areas so it’s important they are well looked after to minimise service disruption.”
