More than 250 people are set to attend the Fire Conference later this year, which will see a range of key decision makers in the sector share best practice for fire prevention in the waste industry.
Taking place on 7 November, and organised by letsrecycle.com, the conference aims to bring together chief fire officers, regulators, insurers, local authorities, site operators and waste management companies, to share cross-sector knowledge and encourage collaboration.
In the first session, Gill Weeks OBE, Environment Agency board member, will be explaining how the waste industry can work together to prevent waste fires.
Ms Weeks, who received an OBE in 2011 for services to the waste industry, was re-appointed to the Agency board earlier this year by Environment Secretary Michael Gove (see letsrecycle.com story).
Commenting on the conference, Ms Weeks said: “Fires at waste facilities have been a major problem for the sector and working together to help prevent and reduce the impact of waste fires is essential. Fire Prevention Plans aim to reduce that risk.”
Ms Weeks will be joined by Kate Thomas, senior permitting officer at Natural Resources Wales, providing a wide range of knowledge to the session.
Other speakers in session one include representatives from both East Sussex and Staffordshire fire and rescue services who will discuss their experiences with waste fires and the testing procedure.
Insurance
The second session includes a talk from the perspective of an insurer, with Mark Allen, director of insurance company Willis Tower Watson explaining waste fires from an insurance point of view.
The company, which is also an event partner of the conference, is one of the largest insurance firms in the world, operating in more than 140 countries with a workforce of more than 40,000 employees.
Fire prevention plans
Andrew Lake, senior environmental consultant at Wiser Environment , will follow on and discuss FFPs and what they should include.
“This conference provides a unique opportunity to hear from the major stakeholders involved in preventing fires in the waste industry,” explained Mr Lake.
He added: “I’ll be speaking about the challenges faced by waste operators trying to balance the need for practical and cost-effective ways to minimise their risk of fire whilst ensuring that fire prevention plans are approved by the EA.”
Other speakers at the event include Geoff Smallwood of Renewi, Chris Jones of the WISH Forum and Andrew Goddard of Freeland Horticulture.
