Lifting and material processing machinery manufacturer Terex has announced plans to build a £12 million production facility in Derry, Northern Ireland, which it hopes will be operational this year.
The company says the facility will focus on the design, manufacture and development of its Terex Ecotec shredding line, as well as its mobile conveying systems.
According to the company – which has factories in Germany, Australia and Italy, and has its UK headquarters in Coventry – this comes as part of plans to capitalise on the “significant growth” in the waste management, recycling and mobile conveying sectors.

Announcing the investment, Kieran Hegarty, president of Terex Materials Processing, said: “As part of our growth strategy, we continually review markets to identify potential opportunities. The waste management, recycling and mobile conveying sectors are areas of significant growth and our objective is to be recognised as a leading global manufacturer in these areas. Our facility will enable us to realise this ambition.”
The Ecotec line was established in 2014 “as a strategic response to meet the specialised needs of customers in the growing waste management and recycling sector”, the company says.

The Derry facility will focus on developing advanced waste management and recycling products and services for Terex Ecotec customers “with the goal of becoming a global leader in the industry”.
The Conveying Systems were established to respond to “increasing demand for mobile conveying systems” and help to complement existing equipment and enable the firm to enter the port and terminal industry.

Work has already begun at the facility, on the Campsie industrial estate, according to Terex, and it is set to create approximately 100 jobs.
Mr Hegarty added: “Our investment of this size in a new facility will support our ongoing growth and development as we seek to build on the momentum of increased demand for our products globally.”
