Teignbridge district council has launched an investigation after one of its waste collection crew workers suffered a chest injury yesterday (14 February).
Emergency services were called to Oak Tree Grove, Shaldon, at around midday to reports of a male casualty with a chest injury.
The Devon council has confirmed the incident involved a vehicle and a member of its recycling crew.
The crew member, who has not been named, was attended by two rapid response cars and an ambulance from the South Western Ambulance Service, before being airlifted by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
According to the council, the man was taken to hospital ‘as a precautionary measure’ and was kept in overnight for observations.
A spokesperson for Teignbridge council said: “We are currently investigating the cause of this accident and would like to wish the crew member a speedy recovery. All waste and recycling staff are required to complete a full induction training programme and appropriate safety procedures are put in place.”
The Health and Safety Executive was also notified yesterday with a report.
