VWS to verify own equipment for pay-by-weight services
VWS is the first company in the UK to be approved by the National Measurement and Regulation Office to verify its own bin weighing and underbody weighing equipment for pay-by-weight services.
To become authorised to carry out self-verification under the Measuring Instruments Directive and Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments Directive, VWS was required to become an approved manufacturer.

Meanwhile, one of VWS’ customers, Leeds-based waste management company Forge Recycling, has doubled the size of its fleet and increased revenue by 40% since introducing a pay-by-weight service using VWS kit.
Around 85% of the bins collected and emptied by Forge Recycling are now weighed.
“It means that we can now identify heavy bins and charge for any excess weight collected, which is additional revenue that was previously being missed,” said Harvey Mills, director of Forge Recycling.

Aberdeen city council has fitted “the latest camera recording systems” on 32 vehicles in its waste and recycling fleet, which includes having a camera on each side of the vehicle.

The step, said equipment supplier Innovative Safety Systems was taken to “keep the public, crews and its vehicles safe”, as well as reduce insurance premiums.
The technology will also be fitted to 12 new vehicles due for delivery to the council by March 2018.
With four cameras fitted to the exterior of the vehicle, and a quad screen function, there is said to be total visibility, and over a month’s worth of activity can be stored at any one time.
The RX3 system from Innovative Safety Systems is now part of the standard specification on all new waste and recycling vehicles operating in the city.
O’Donovan adopts compliance software
London-based O’Donovan Waste Disposal has announced that it has become the first waste management company to employ online compliance software SilkThread.

SilkThread is a compliance-based web application which enables managers across the business to access checks and information in one central place ensuring records are kept completely up to date, the company explained.
Lee Hayhow, chief operations manager at O’Donovan said: “This software simplifies a system which could otherwise be daunting and makes sure all audit information is up to date and easily accessible.
Utilising SilkThread ensures that O’Donovan consistently achieves these standards and helps us look for new ways to raise the benchmark.”
The software also provides O’Donovan with the ability to self-audit and to ensure there are no gaps in its health and safety systems.
‘First of its kind’ camera to monitor inside of cabin
TrakM8 has launched a new camera which can be used to monitor the road ahead and the inside of the cab.
The new ‘RoadHawk 600’
The camera, called ‘RoadHawk 600’, can be configured to automatically provide operators with real-time images and video footage from inside the cab as well as events picked up by the device’s built-in accelerometer.
Trakm8 stated that it believes the camera is the first of its kind in the market.
The ‘RoadHawk 600’ mirrors other Trakm8’s tracking devices, including features such as driver behaviour, remote tacho downloads, CANbus integration and driver ID.
Route optimisation and scheduling algorithms are also integrated into the device, with the ability to automate schedules in seconds while ensuring the highest possible vehicle utilisation rate and reducing overall mileage.
Colin Ferguson, managing director of fleet and optimisation at Trakm8, said: “The device will single-handedly allow operators to address compliance issues, reduce insurance liability, identify driver training requirements and offer advanced notification vehicle faults.”
