Support for bin collectors ‘overwhelming’

By 09/04/2020News

Waste management businesses FCC Environment and Veolia have highlighted positive responses from the public during the coronavirus pandemic.

Veolia

Veolia has said support from the public for its #streetsmiles campaign has been “overwhelming”, with people all over the country putting out thank you notes or displaying smiling suns in their windows.

Residents have been thanking refuse workers across the country as part of Veolia’s campaign

The resource management company launched the nationwide #StreetSmiles campaign this week,  encouraging residents to put pictures of smiling suns in their windows as a way to show gratitude for their bin collectors.

Gavin Graveson, executive vice president for Veolia UK and Ireland, said: “We have been overwhelmed by public support for our front line staff, with many residents asking us how they can express gratitude towards their waste collectors. #StreetsSmiles allows residents to say ‘thanks’ safely, and spreads sunshine to key workers as they carry out essential tasks”.

FCC and Wychavon

Meanwhile residents in Wychavon, Hertfordshire have surprised bin collectors with drawings, messages and gifts as a way to say thank you for being ‘true heroes’ for the community.

This includes John Challis, who starred as Boycie from ‘Only fools and horses’, who also joined the movement, leaving warm messages for waste collectors on his bin.

Paul Farmer, a contract manager at FCC Environment, the council’s contractor said: “I am immensely proud of the FCC environment team and the wiser waste and resource management industry for doing our very best to continue day to day duties during these extremely challenging times.”

FCC has also said that residents of Bracknell Forest, Reading and Wokingham Boroughs are showing “incredible support” to the bin crews and re3 staff who sort the recycling collection by sharing heartfelt messages of praise, good wishes and colourful drawings of rainbows to thank them for delivering a great work for the community in the face of COVID-19.
