Sandbags filled with material from road sweepings are being offered at a Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Derbyshire to protect homes from flood damage.

Suez Recycling and Recovery UK is providing the sandbags at its Waterswallows HWRC in Buxton, which is near to the Toddbrook Reservoir in Whaley Bridge – which suffered from damage after heavy rainfall last week.
Over 1,000 residents of Whaley Bridge were evacuated from their homes when the reservoir’s dam threatened to collapse.
The sandbags on offer in Derbyshire are produced at Suez’s street sweeping facility in Wolverhampton, where materials are washed, processed and put into the bags. The facility was commissioned in 2012 and receives up to 30,000 tonnes of road sweepings annually from across the Midlands.

“It’s only a small contribution to the efforts, but most of the team live locally and wanted to give something back.”
Jason Ruffell, senior site manager at Suez, said: “We’re really glad we were able to do this. It’s only a small contribution to the efforts, but most of the team live locally and wanted to give something back.”
As stocks of the sandbags are limited, Suez is encouraging residents not to take more than ten per household.
The Toddbrook dam had threatened to collapse after heavy rainfall in Derbyshire
Whaley Bridge residents who had been evacuated were allowed to return to their homes this week (August 7).
Though heavy rain is forecast across Derbyshire for the next few days, the Environment Agency has said it is confident that the reservoir will be able to hold due to a 24-hour pumping system. Repairs are yet to be finished on the Toddbrook dam itself.
