Suez Recycling and Recovery UK has won two treatments contracts in Scotland, with Aberdeenshire and the Highland councils.
The waste and resource management company secured a £1.8 million contract with Aberdeenshire council to process 15,000 tonnes of dry mixed recycling per year, for a period of 12 months.
The waste will be sent to the Altens East MRF near Aberdeen, operated by Suez
Suez explained that the material will be bulked at the local authorities transfer stations before being brought to its Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Altens East, Aberdeen.
Opened in 2017, the MRF is a £27m joint venture faculty between Suez and Aberdeen city council.
The facility is capable of processing 20 tonnes of mixed recycling an hour, including glass, cardboard, newspaper, plastics, and metals. According to Suez, the facility diverts 71,000 tonnes of Aberdeen’s waste from landfill every year.
Suez has existing contracts with Aberdeen city council and Angus council for dry mixed recycling that is also treated the Altens East MRF.
Aberdeenshire council waste manager Ros Baxter added: “We look forward to working with SUEZ who will be delivering an efficient waste recycling service over the next 12 months, during which time they will process 15,000 tonnes of dry mixed recycling right here in the North-East of Scotland and therefore minimising the carbon impact of haulage.”

Suez also announced that it had been reawarded a contract with the Highland council, which will the company continue to treat up to 40,000 tonnes of residual waste for 15 months.
The waste will be sent to the Stoneyhill landfill site, where it will be disposed of “carefully” and landfill gas captured. The gas captured atStoneyhill landfill is used to generate electricity for local homes.
