Local authorities across the UK have announced delays and disruption to waste and recycling collection services amid weather warnings as Storm Darcy hits.
An amber weather warning is in place in Northern areas of England, while less severe yellow warnings for snow and ice have been issued for large parts of the rest of the UK.
This comes as local authorities are already battling with lower than normal staffing levels, as a result of cases of Covid-19 amongst their workforces (see letsrecycle.com story).
Safety
Rugby borough council suspended all waste collections this morning (8 February) after one of its crew members slipped in the snow.
The council asked residents to leave bins out ready for collection, and that it will asses road and pavement conditions later to restart collections “if they improve”.
Meanwhile, East Suffolk council also cancelled all waste collections for today, due to the “adverse weather conditions”.
Main routes in the area have been gritted, however side roads are “extremely icy”. The council said that as “90% of all collections occur on untreated side roads, it is considered unsafe to put any vehicles out today”.
At the moment, the council aims to collect all bins one day later than scheduled, and has asked residents to leave bins out.
The council said that a Tuesday collection “depends entirely” on the weather conditions dueng the rest of today and overnight.
Durham
Durham county council has also announced this morning that some household waste and recycling centres will all be delayed in opening because of heavy snow.

Our bin crews will continue to collect bins that have been missed due to the weather. Please leave them out for collection and we will get to them as soon as we can. pic.twitter.com/Fki4nLakug

South Yorkshire
Areas in South Yorkshire has also been badly hit with snow and ice, however Doncaster council said there are currently “no plans” to suspend services at HWRCs or bin collections.
It added: “However, both services are weather dependent and a judgement call on the safety of crews and members of the public, in due course.”
Scotland
The Scottish Highlands have been one of the worst affected areas north of the border.
Stirling council has warned residents that there may be disruptions to household waste collections in the coming days and to watch for updates. Other councils have also warned residents to expect delays.
Northern Ireland
Mid Ulster council in Northern Ireland also apologised for bin collection disruptions last week because of the weather conditions.
***Bin Collections***
The poor weather conditions have affected bin collections in the Lough Fea and Glenshane areas today. Any bins missed will be collected tomorrow morning instead, so please continue to leave them at the kerbside.
