VIDEO REPORT: The importance of Viridor as part of the Pennon Group – which also owns South West Water – has been emphasised by Sarah Heald, director of corporate affairs and investor relations at Pennon.
And, the Pennon director has also revealed how she sees the waste management sectors as increasingly aligned with government policy and the views of the public.
Speaking to letsrecycle.com, Ms Heald highlighted a strong set of results for Pennon with South West Water doing well, but with a particular focus on Viridor which has an updated strategy “and a lot of exciting projects”.
Ms Heald highlighted the development of energy recovery facilities and the start of work on the plastics recycling plant investment at Avonmouth.

‘Exciting time’
“It’s a very exciting time to be at Viridor and to be in the waste industry,” she said. “It does feel like the stars have aligned between the businesses performing well in the sector, the policy framework looking really strong behind it with the waste strategy and obviously the blue planet effect of David Attenborough which has really captured the public’s imagination. And that’s fantastic and I think we really feel that at Viridor, that sense of mission.”

And Ms Heald also explained Pennon’s focus with Viridor on operating its activities using a de-risked infrastructure model with long-term contracts. “This has been done very successfully across the energy from waste facilities and is now being developed across plastics,” she said.
She also reflected on the line up at Defra without Michael Gove and hopes the momentum will remain.
