VIDEO REPORT: Plastic Omnium underground bins across London have been given a spring clean by a specialist cleaning crew from France who embarked on a tour of the UK last month.
Over four weeks, the two man crew have been raising, emptying, jet-washing and lowering hundreds of Plastic Omnium’s underground systems.
Assignment
Starting at Lambeth’s Albert Carr Gardens, in South London, the crew then headed to Tower Hamlets in East London, and Myatt’s Field in South East London, before moving out of the capital.
The month-long assignment will culminate in a series of cleaning and maintenance demonstrations in Peterborough, Cambridge and other locations.
Plastic Omnium’s cleaning crews are provided as part of the company’s service to its local authority, registered social landlord and property management company clients. The cleaning, maintenance and repairs service can also be engaged to service underground waste management systems previously installed by alternative suppliers.
Each cleaning crew is supported by a purpose-built truck, which carries a self-contained hot wash system, and a hydraulic crane which is used to lift each underground container out of its mounting.
Service
Plastic Omnium’s cleaning service prolongs the operational life of each underground container, helps residents to keep their environments clean and encourages increased rates of recycling, the company says.
Richard Gregg, managing director of Plastic Omnium Urban Systems, based in Oldbury, said: “We are delighted to welcome our cleaning crew to the UK, where they will be ensuring that Plastic Omnium’s high-quality underground waste management systems are clean, grime-free and operating perfectly.
“The systems are installed in a wide range of urban environments and on behalf of local authorities, housing associations, property management companies and other private sector providers.
Mr Gregg added: “As our team moves around the UK, we look forward to seeing bright, shining underground waste management systems emerge from the gloom of the British winter.”

Benefits
Discussing some of the benefits of using an underground system, Alan Craddock, project manager at Plastic Omnium explained that they have a greater capacity than standard waste containers, with a smaller footprint. They produce less odour and are more aesthetic, he added.
Plastic Omnium/SULO is a major supplier of two and four wheeled bins, underground waste systems, maintenance and washing services, kitchen caddies, litter bins, street orderly barrows, and ID weigh data management technology.
