Two of the UK’s largest waste management brokers have merged to form SWRNewstar.
The merger is between outsourcing companies, Specialist Waste Recycling (SWR), based in Alton, and Buckingham-based New Star Environmental (Newstar).
SWRNewstar said that the merger creates a business which will have an annual turnover of £41 million.

Commenting on the merger, chairman of the new company, Angus MacDonald, said: “SWRNewstar is an exciting merger of two similar companies that provide an appealing, alternative offering to the mega wheels-based waste companies.”
SWR, delivers outsourced waste solutions predominantly in the leisure, automotive and retail sectors. The company reports “significant growth” over the past 10 years with a previously planned performance of £30m in revenue in December 2017.
Newstar is an outsourced waste management business operating nationally to deliver recycling-led solutions predominately in the grocery, property management and retail markets. Newstar reports a turnover of £11m as of December 2017.

The news comes after both parties founded the Waste Management Broker Association (WMBA) – a body set up to represent outsourcing firms within the waste sector – earlier this year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Both companies will remain in their existing offices with the merger allowing for employment opportunity and growth for existing employees in both the Buckinghamshire and Hampshire areas.
Debenhams
Newstar has a contract with national retailer Debenhams, which has over 160 stores across the UK and ROI.
Debenhams was looking to tender a waste management contract. The retailer appointed Newstar to run the tender design, tender management, mobilisation and full contract management post tender.
