French-owned certification and inspection group SOCOTEC has announced the acquisition of Environmental Services Group (ESG), the UK-based testing and services firm.
ESG, which was previously majority owned by 3i Group PLC (3i), has 28 sites across the UK and Ireland, including 20 UKAS-accredited testing and measurement laboratories. The company provides testing, inspection and compliance services, in a range of sectors including recycling and waste management.
Its services to the waste industry include biofuel testing, waste acceptance criteria testing, landfill leachate testing, and landfill gas analysis. ESG also provides loss on ignition (LOI) testing which is now a mandatory procedure for waste operators to ensure they are paying the correct landfill tax.

The company employs around 1,400 people, and generates almost €100 million in revenue, it has been claimed.
SOCOTEC assists businesses in the areas of health and safety, quality, and the environment, providing risk management services. These services include inspection and measurement, assistance and consultancy, certification and training.
“ESG’s leadership and its extensive range of services, which will enhance our own scope of expertise, will give us another large base in Europe, second in size to the one we have in France. This acquisition, which will double our revenue outside France, is a perfect fit for our international expansion plans.”

Commenting on the acquisition, SOCOTEC chief executive Hervé Montjotin said: “ESG’s leadership and its extensive range of services, which will enhance our own scope of expertise, will give us another large base in Europe, second in size to the one we have in France. This acquisition, which will double our revenue outside France, is a perfect fit for our international expansion plans.”
ESG chief executive Ian Sparks added: “It has been extremely important for us to find an owner that shares our drive for ambitious growth through a client-driven strategy. SOCOTEC, with its global footprint, has an expansive presence, offering inspection and measurement, assistance and consultancy, training and certification services, and works across a number of similar sectors to ESG. This is really good news for both ESG and our clients, as we will be able to provide a wider geographic offering, and also an even broader technical service provision.”
Having secured a platform in the UK, SOCOTEC said it is aiming to generate €800 million in revenue in 2020.
