Zero Waste Scotland today (27 May) announced the appointment of Ray Georgeson as its new head of resource management, waste and recycling.
Joining in July 2021, in a statement Zero Waste Scotland said Mr Georgeson would “play a vital role in the organisation that is accelerating and supporting Scotland’s just transition to zero waste and a circular economy”.
In his role, he is to lead on several programmes described as “pivotal to the company’s core objectives”. These include maximising the value from waste and supporting the overall ambition of leading Scotland towards using products and resources responsibly.
The statement added that “The new Recycling Improvement Fund and work with Scottish Government to set out a clear waste routemap are just some of the key areas of work that Ray will lead a team at Zero Waste Scotland to deliver.”
Career
Mr Georgeson’s career ranges from community recycling in the 1980s through to the director roles at the former Waste Watch charity and WRAP, where he was director of policy having helped found the organisation in 2001. Since 2008 he has run his own consultancy and for a time ran the now defunct Resource Association. He was awarded the MBE for services to sustainable waste management in 1999.
Iain Gulland, chief executive, Zero Waste Scotland, said: “There is no doubt that we have reached a crucial point in Scotland’s history in addressing how we manage our waste and ultimately lead the way to ending the climate crisis.
“It is fantastic that Ray is joining our team”
“It is fantastic that Ray is joining our team. He has been prominent in the development of recycling, resource management and the circular economy for more than thirty years and I look forward to working with him as he brings his expertise to Zero Waste Scotland”.
‘Delighted’
Having recently moved from Yorkshire to the Scottish Borders, Mr Georgeson said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Zero Waste Scotland at such an important time, when we really need to step up our continuing improvement of the way Scotland uses resources and fully contribute to the imperative to accelerate climate action. I have held the team and its leadership in high regard for many years and am looking forward immensely to having the opportunity to contribute.”
Ray will be a vital member of the Zero Waste Scotland team as it continues to influence strategies – at local and national level – to keep materials in use for long as possible, reusing wherever we can.
