Rigid plastic packaging company RPC has announced a proposed acquisition of the European waste container manufacturer ESE World BV for around €262.5 million (£219 million).
RPC has described ESE as Europe’s “largest temporary waste storage solutions provider” serving a customer base which includes local authorities and private waste firms in countries including the UK, Germany, Hungary, France and Italy.

Headquartered in Maastricht in the Netherlands, ESE’s manufacturing facilities are located in Germany and France, alongside a research & development centre in Germany. The company’s UK operations, which includes its UK sales team, are based at Coalville in Leicestershire.
Products manufactured by the firm include wheeled-bins, fixed on-street bins, hazardous waste storage bays, composting containers and underground collection banks.
The company employs approximately 600 full time employees and achieved revenues of close to €200 million for the 2015/16 financial year. Björn Hedenström, chief executive of ESE, will continue to lead the business which will be an independent business unit within the RPC Promens division going forward, the companies have announced.

‘Growth’
In a statement, RPC said the deal would provide a strategic opportunity to acquire an established growth platform in the European waste storage solutions market.
The proposed acquisition is conditional upon obtaining regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017, RPC has said.
The acquisition continues a year of expansion for Northamptonshire-based RPC after it agreed to buy the plastic film recycling and packaging manufacturer BPI in a cash and share deal worth around £262 million (see letsrecycle.com story).
RPC has also acquired shrink film manufacturer Sanders Polyfilms – which is to be integrated into the new RPC BPI division, as well as Dutch firm Jagtenberg Plastics and the Italian business Plasitape during 2016.
The company which has operations in 31 countries across Europe and in North America, Asia and North Africa, employs close to 20,000 people, achieving a revenue of close to £1,226 million, according to financial reports published this week.
