Biffa expands Amazon work
Waste management firm Biffa has expanded its recycling services work for retail giant Amazon.

It is understood that the company, based in High Wycombe, won the contract to handle material including cardboard from its large sites last year but has now extended this to Amazon’s local distribution sites.
Neither Biffa or Amazon would comment on the arrangement with the latter telling letsrecycle.com that it did not comment on suppliers.
However a spokeswoman for Amazon referred letsrecycle.com to the company’s aim of “always driving improvements in the sustainability of packaging across Amazon’s supply chain, starting with our own packaging and our own operations.”
Helistrat renews Poundland contract
Facility manager Helistrat, has announced the renewal of its contract with discount retailer Poundland.

The contract, worth in excess of £1 million per annum, will see Helistrat further increase recycling rates and “lever the commercial and environmental benefits of effective secondary resource management”.
Commenting on the announcement, Helistrat CEO, Harvey Laud, said: “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Poundland to reduce the amount of waste produced, increase the amount that can be recycled and develop innovative ways realise the value of their material.
“The work we undertake ensures that they not only manage their waste in a sustainable and cost-effective manner but also supports them in developing the environmental credentials of their brand.”
Helistrat’s three-year contract is for Poundland and Dealz stores in the UK and ROI, including Poundland’s distribution centres in Harlow, Bilston, Willenhall and Wigan. Helistrat provides a dedicated Account Manager who is embedded in the Poundland operations team as well as 360° wraparound helpdesk service, management data and reporting capability and compliance auditing.
UKWSL stays on service with Roadchef
UKWSL has announced the renewal of its contract with motorway services operator Roadchef.

The renewal sees UKWSL in charge of Roadchef’s waste and recycling services in 22 of their key sites for a further 5 years, a contract worth £4.5 million over the period.
In a statement, UKWSL said that the collaboration between the two companies, working together since 2015, has proven to be a profitable one both financially and environmentally.
It noted that “in the past five months alone, UKWSL has affected a reduction in spend of over £50,000 for Roadchef, their total saving aspiration for the entire year. The past two years has also seen an enormous reduction in the use of on-site compactor machines. Previously machines were operated on a standard weekly run but following expert analysis by UKWSL, it was discovered that fortnightly runs would suffice for the majority of Roadchef sites, the majority of the time.”
And, UKWSL said its “dedication” has been further rewarded in the trial expansion of their remit to include grounds maintenance in addition to the traditional waste and recycling services. These trial operations see UKWSL innovatively using the coffee grounds from their three internal composters to fertilise the grounds of the service areas.
Commenting on the success of the partnership, Roadchef’s Director of Purchasing and Data, Mike Jackson, says, “Waste management is a complicated process for our business due to the volume of visitors at our sites. We’re delighted to be working with UKWSL who have demonstrated an excellent understanding of our business and our recycling requirements.”
Max Kanda, managing director of UKWSL, added, “After a very successful couple of years, we are delighted to be partnering with Roadchef once more and have in place an ambitious plan to further increase their recycling rates and reduce their waste to landfill.”
