Even though it is supplying Ferrybridge with RDF and more domestic plants are set to come on stream, waste management firm Renewi (formerly Shanks) has signed another export contract for RDF produced under its East London contract.
However, the decision to supply more RDF to AEB builds on a long relationship between Renewi and the Dutch incineration firm. It is thought that some of the first ever RDF shipments went from East London to AEB around 2010.
Today (24 January) Renewi announced that it has “widened and strengthened its current cooperation with AEB” by signing a 10-year off-take contract to supply refuse derived fuel to AEB’s energy from waste plant in Amsterdam.
Renewi is already a supplier of RDF for incineration in Europe: in August 2016, for example, it signed a a 10-year contract with EEW for the supply of around 100,000 tonnes per year of RDF for recovery on the new third line at Delfzijl, Holland.

The AEB facility in Amsterdam
Renewi will supply a similar amount to AEB with 100,000 tonnes per annum of residual waste being sent as RDF which will be produced mainly by its 25-year East London (ELWA) operations.
Heat
The East London waste will generate electricity and the heat generated will be used for district heating in the Amsterdam area.
The contract, said Renewi, provides a secure off-take outlet for the remaining RDF produced from its mechanical biological treatment (MBT) operations in its ELWA contract. “Renewi treats a mixed household waste stream, separating the organic fraction and creating a high quality RDF for the production of energy at AEB. It builds on the success of Renewi’s relationship with the ELWA Authority that has delivered mutual benefits and increases diversion from landfill. It also guarantees significant input in to the AEB facility.”
The contract expands on the current one year agreement between Renewi’s UK operations and AEB. It will run to the end of 2027, with an option to extend after this period. It also includes flexibility for Renewi to provide some of the RDF from any of its UK or Dutch facilities, allowing the company to capitalise on any fluctuations in RDF availability across its portfolio.
Supply certainty
For AEB the contract is giving it a needed certainty of supply as it has had faced some uncertainties with some supplies from the UK in recent years.
James Priestley, Managing Director of Renewi’s Municipal Division said: “We are making good progress with our recovery plan in the Municipal Division and securing this contract, in addition to the recent 20 year RDF contract at Ferrybridge, is another important step forward. The new AEB contract provides Renewi with another long-term fuel outlet for our largest PFI contract, which had previously been exposed to market volatility.”
Sharon Lea, interim managing director for the East London Waste Authority said: “We welcome this initiative which supports the Authority’s ambition to further increase the diversion of waste away from landfill which already stands at over 90%.”
