Council recycling officers are gearing up for the LARAC Conference and Celebration Awards 2016 in Nottingham this week – with recycling harmonisation and quality among the hot topics for the event.
The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee event brings together council officers and the wider waste and recycling industry to debate important developments affecting councils.

The two-day event, which is to take place at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on 12-13 October, will also see six awards presented for the highest standard initiatives spearheaded by local authorities over the past year.
Issues being discussed on the 2016 agenda include WRAP’s latest work to harmonise recycling collections across the UK, as well as the future for municipal waste in a post-Brexit landscape.
Other topics include the best ways to improve quality of recyclables to generate income and boost recycling and composting rates, as well as the effects of social media on modern communication campaigns.
Delegates will also get the chance to participate in a number of workshops on day two, including brainstorms on how to reduce householder confusion and revenue budget saving.
Awards
The highlight of the event comes at the end of day one, when attendees will get the opportunity to wine, dine and network at the 2016 Celebration Awards.
Judges have described the 2016 finalists as among the strongest ever seen – and particularly praised the work of local authorities grappling with falling budgets (see letsrecycle.com story).
Innovation
The Qualitainer allows easy viewing to remove contamination
This year the LARAC Conference maintains its reputation for showcasing some of the best innovations in the waste industry designed to improve local authority performance.
GJF Fabrications will launch its Qualitainer Hooklift at the event, which will be on display at the entrance of the centre. The container product has wide aperture mesh sides allowing people to observe its contents along its full length and height – and remove contaminated materials from a load.
GJF’s managing director, Dr David Gillett, said: “The Qualitainer Hooklift has been developed after listening to municipal recycling site managers and site staff across the UK. They widely report persistent problems of contamination dumped in Hooklift containers for recyclable materials, even on sites where budgets still allow them to be well populated with staff.“
