London waste management firm Powerday has today (April 3) commenced a contract with Geminor for the export of 170,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuel (RDF) to supply the Hogdalen energy from waste plant in Sweden.
The fuel is produced at the company’s Old Oak Sidings and Enfield Materials Recycling Facilities and loaded for transfer to Sheerness Port, where it is transported to Oxelösund Port in East Sweden.
The RDF will then be transferred to the Hogdalen facility in Stockholm which is operated by Fortum.
Hogdalen
This plant produces 91 MW of energy per annum, enough to deliver heat and power to 20,000 homes for which Powerday will supply approximately 30% of the fuel.
Powerday has been working with Geminor since 2015 and has carried out extensive testing as part of the preparation for the Swedish supply contract which included a trial of 8,000 tonnes through the summer of 2016.
Commenting on the start of the deal, Powerday’s chairman, Mick Crossan said: “Powerday produces a high quality RDF which suits the Fortum plants’ specification, so we are delighted to have agreed this new contract which ensures that our clients’ non-recyclable materials otherwise bound for landfill are used to maximum benefit.”
Scope
James Maiden, country manager at Geminor UK, said: “The size and scope of this project is incredibly exciting for Geminor. Refined RDF is so-called because it is processed to a greater extent, creating a cleaner fuel with less residues. This contract helps Powerday to deliver long term sustainable end markets for their clients and represents a significant contract for Geminor.”
Powerday operates two large scale waste processing sites in at Willesden Junction and Enfield. Combined, the facilities are licensed to process just under two million tonnes of waste per year. The company primarily handles commercial and industrial waste from London and the South East of England at the sites.
