Forty years of service at Luxus
Technical manager Terry Burton is celebrating forty years of service with Lincolnshire plastics compounder Luxus.

Having joined the company as an extrusion operator in 1979, Mr Burton now leaders the polymer development team and has been in the role since 2008. He was treated to a celebratory lunch and a 40-year-old bottle of vintage port.
When he started at Luxus the company had just 20 members of staff and “a real family-like atmosphere” and hands-on approach. Luxus now employs 160 staff at its plant in Louth.
Mr Burton said: “I have one of the best roles in the business, with new products always comes fresh challenges, as we are increasingly using interesting and novel additives to support demands for enhanced scratch resistance and light-weighting to help stretch the boundaries in sustainable plastics technology.
New chief scientist for Defra
Professor Gideon Henderson has been appointed Defra’s new Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA).

Currently a professor of earth sciences at the University of Oxford, he will join Defra in October as a replacement for Sir Ian Boyd, who is leaving the department after seven years in the role.
Professor Henderson’s work uses geochemistry to understand surface earth processes, particularly those relating to climate, the ocean, and the carbon cycle. He is currently researching the potential and risks of accelerating natural processes to removal CO2 from the atmosphere.
The new CSA said: “I am thrilled to be joining Defra at a time when the environment is such a strong priority and there is an ever-growing public level of environmental awareness.
“The UK faces many challenges – among them responding to climate change and helping meet a net zero emissions goal, as well as ensuring our food’s security and realising the goals of the 25 Year Environment Plan.”
DS Smith appoints paper division finance director
DS Smith’s new finance director for its paper division will be Emma Ciechan.

Ms Ciechan joined the packaging company in 2016 as director of planning and performance management. She joined DS Smith in 2016 to build and lead the financial planning and analysis group finance function and expanded her role to manage the company’s sustainability strategy.
Ms Ciechan said: “I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and the opportunity to work with the senior management team within our Paper division.
“DS Smith’s recent initiatives around paper making, such as our work on coffee cup recycling and our insights around plastic replacement in the supermarkets, could have a significant impact on some of the biggest challenges in our society.”
The sustainability team will now be led by Greg Dawson, director of corporate affairs at the company.
BHS name sales director for Max-AI
Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) has named Remi Le Grand as regional sales director for its Max-AI technology.
Remi Le Grand has been named regional sales director for BHS’ Max-AI technology
He will be responsible for its sales team and business development in Europe. Le Grand spent six years in sales with BHS-subsidiary Nihot Recycling Technology, based in Amsterdam.
Rich Reardon, VP of Sales and Marketing at BHS, said: “Remi has a proven track record of delivering successful solutions that encompass a broad range of recycling equipment.”
“His holistic experience in recycling systems and deep understanding of our AI and robotics offerings make him the perfect fit to take Max-AI to the next level in this region.”
Max-AI uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify recyclables similar to the way a person does. It then directs sorting equipment, including robotic and optical sorters.
New recruits for UNTHA UK
Shredder specialist UNTHA UK has appointed a new sales manager and service coordinator as the business prepares for growth.
Julian Lamb and Julie Cassidy have joined the team at UNTHA UK
Julian Lamb has as sales manager, following almost 20 years working in the waste sector. He will assist with the growing volume of technical enquiries coming into UNTHA UK’s headquarters.
Julie Cassidy has been appointed service coordinator. She has first-hand experience of the environmental engineering industry, having worked for a compressed air specialist for the past five years. Her work will provide administrative support to UNTHA’s after-sales department.
The appointment comes at UNTHA reports a 30% increase in enquiries compared to this time last year and the company featured in the Digital Enterprise 100 report. Ex-chairman Chris Oldfield has also returned to UNTHA UK as commercial director.
