London-based commercial waste and recycling company, Paper Round, has been awarded Living Wage Foundation accreditation.
The Living Wage Foundation, launched in 2011, works with employers to help them implement the ‘real Living Wage’ that meets the cost of living. The wage is independently-calculated each year based on what employees and their families need to live.
Accreditations are awarded to employers that pay the real Living Wage or those “committed to an agreed timetable of implementation”, by awarding the Living Waste Employer Mark.
BPR Group
According to BPR Group, Paper Round’s umbrella company, this accreditation means Paper Round ‘guarantees fairness and makes sure all staff can afford a good standard of living’.
BPR said: “Our Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Paper Round, regardless of whether they are direct employees or third-party contracted staff; receive a minimum hourly wage of £8.45 in the UK or £9.75 in London.”
“Both these rates are significantly higher than the statutory minimum for over 25s of £7.50 per hour introduced in April 2017.”
Explaining the benefits of receiving the accreditation, BPR said studies have shown that companies who are part of the Living Wage Foundation have a lower turnover of contract staff. And, according to BPR, this will also benefit clients, as the staff will be more experienced and able to provide “better customer service”.
Bill Swan, managing director of BPR Group, said: “Paper Round has always had a very strong social and ethical side to our business. We have historically paid staff above the statutory minimum wage and we are delighted to formalise this and give a commitment to pay all our staff the Living Wage.
“We believe that this is not only the right thing to do, but will lead to better service for our clients. It will be easier to recruit and retain staff, giving us a passionate and loyal workforce committed to excellent customer service.”
Welcome
Katherine Chapman, director of Living Wage Foundation, said: “We welcome Paper Round to the Living Wage movement as an accredited employer.
“Responsible businesses across the UK are voluntarily signing up to pay the real Living Wage now. The real Living Wage rate is annually calculated to reflect the real costs of living.”
“We are a movement of over 3,000 UK employers who together want to go further than the government minimum to make sure all their staff earn enough to live on. We have lots of small businesses as well as big household names like; IKEA, Aviva, Chelsea and Everton Football Clubs and many more.
“These businesses recognise that the Living Wage accreditation is the mark of a responsible employer and they, like Paper Round join us, because they too believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.”
