Whitehead Restoration Limited of Wigan – part of the wider NPL Group – has acquired a 100% shareholding in Avondale Holdings.
As part of the acquisition, the company takes over Avondale’s integrated waste management facility, sited in Polmont, Falkirk.
The NPL Group is a commercial property developer. Group businesses include Bradley Park Waste Management, Thornton Facility Management and NPL Developments.
Avondale owns and operates two landfill sites, a renewable energy centre and one of Scotland’s largest recycling facilities. This is in addition to specialist capabilities in the treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW), industrial and commercial waste streams and contaminated soil treatment.
Funding
In 2013, letsrecycle.com reported that funding was being sought by Avondale to reopen the £20m materials recycling facility in Polmont. (see letsrecycle.com story)
The facility ceased operations in May 2013, with Avondale chief executive John Holt citing increasing operating costs and a reduction in the volume and market value of recyclable materials for the closure.
The closure resulted in the loss of 70 jobs at the facility, which first opened in February 2012 with the capacity to process 200,000 tonnes of waste each year.
NPL
According to NPL Group, the company is ‘well placed’ to support the circular economy in Scotland and provides much needed treatment capacity for the integration of the landfill ban which comes into force in January 2021.
‘’The acquisition of Avondale is an important milestone in the Group’s Waste Management strategy. It will enable us to integrate a number of our businesses and assets to create a truly national brand.”
Robert McFarlane
NPL Group
Speaking about the purchase, NPL Group chairman, Robert McFarlane said: ‘’The acquisition of Avondale is an important milestone in the Group’s Waste Management strategy. It will enable us to integrate a number of our businesses and assets to create a truly national brand.
“We have some exciting ideas to further the growth, service provision and strategic reach of Avondale within Scotland and with the consolidation of our assets and some further planned acquisitions, we are positioning the business to take advantage in the evolving wider UK waste management sector.”
He continued: “Avondale has a strong management team who indicated that they wanted to share our journey and so the acquisition was a win win for all.’’
Acquisition
NPL said it worked closely with HSBC and other stakeholders to complete the acquisition and was advised by PWC (Glasgow) and Maclay Murray and Spens LLP.
