By 13/07/2018News

North Lanarkshire council in Scotland has revealed that Viridor has won an interim contract worth £17 million for the “receipt, treatment, and onward transmission” of kerbside residual and HWRC waste in both North and central Lanarkshire.

Viridor has secured more work in Lanarkshire, Scotland

Previously, Dow UK had the contract for North Lanarkshire, FCC Environmental held it for Lanarkshire central and Levenseat Ltd & Patersons of Greenoakhil shared Lanarkshire South, as they will continue to do under the interim contract.

When discussing the logistics of the contract, the council said that the kerbside collected residual waste element of the contract has been awarded in its entirety from 1 June 2018 until 30 June 2019.

From then, North Lanarkshire confirmed that the waste is “contracted to commissioning” to Viridor’s £177 million EfW plant in Dunbar, East Lothian.

The interim contract was awarded to Viridor until the waste management company’s £700 million contract with the Clyde Valley Partnership kicks in in December 2019.  This will see with the unified collection of waste from North Lanarkshire , East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, North Ayrshire and Renfrewshire Councils.

South Lanarkshire

Last year Viridor started work on a 10-year contract to treat municipal refuse for South Lanarkshire council in Scotland – worth an estimated £127 million over its lifetime (see letsrecycle.com story).

The arrangement, which could be extended for a further five years, will see Viridor process the residual waste from 1 April 2017.

South Lanarkshire borders the south east of the city of Glasgow – incorporating some of the city’s suburbs. Major towns include East Kilbride, Hamilton and Rutherglen. The area has a population in excess of 300,000 people.
