Millennials ‘least likely’ to recycle

Results from a poll on behalf of services company, Serco, have found that millennials are the ‘least likely’ age group to recycle.

According to Serco, only 49% of 16-34 said they recycle all they can – a fall of eight percentage points year on year. This compares with 70% of 35-54 year olds, 83% of 55-74 year olds and 81% of those aged over 75.

For 16-34 year olds, the most common reasons given were confusion over what can be recycled (16%), the need for recycling collections to be more frequent (12%), and not having recycling bins or bags (11%).

A number of 16-34 year olds admitted they either can’t be bothered with recycling (4%) or find it too time consuming (7%), while 5% said they didn’t believe that waste separated for recycling is actually recycled.

Across all age groups, 68% of UK residents said that they recycle all they can, a fall of three percentage points on last year.

The findings come from a poll conducted by Serco’s Environmental Services business and long-term research partner Future Thinking, which surveyed over 3,000 members of the general public.

The Chamber Business Awards – run by the British Chambers of Commerce – are open to organisations of all sizes and from all sectors.

CDEnviro’s chief operating officer, Marc Jennings, who accepted the award on behalf of the company, said: “We’re delighted that we are able to represent and promote the waste management industry through our participation in these awards.

“Our mission is to continue to ask the difficult questions, take on the difficult challenges and develop new solutions to transform today’s waste into tomorrow’s assets.”

Roadchef renews contract with UKWSL

Waste company, UKWSL, has announced the renewal of its contract with motorway service operator, Roadchef.

The renewal sees UKWSL in charge of Roadchef’s waste and recycling services in 22 of its key sites for a further 5 years, a contract reported to be worth £4.5 million over the period.

According to UKWSL, the past two years have seen an ‘enormous’ reduction in the use of on-site compactor machines.

Reducing collections in turn minimises the environmental impact by reducing the associated carbon footprint of vehicle operations.

UKWSL’s is also trailing expansion of its remit to include grounds maintenance in addition to the traditional waste and recycling services. These trial operations see UKWSL using the coffee grounds from their three internal composters to fertilise the grounds of the service areas.

The event will take place in January 2018 with the date and venue to be announced in the coming weeks.
