Viridor secures Safestore waste contract
Waste management firm, Viridor, has secured a two-year contract with Safestore – one of the UK’s largest self-storage providers.

The deal will see Viridor roll out its recycling and waste management services to Safestore’s 120 sites across the UK.
According to the latter, one of the main decisions for choosing Viridor was down to the company’s decision to transition away from multiple waste management providers to a “centralised contract” with one provider.
Stuart Beavers, head of retail services at Safestore, said: “Viridor will offer Safestore value by implementing different initiatives to help improve our own CSR performance levels such as reducing our carbon levels.”
The contract will also cover a mix of waste streams including ad-hoc requirements for items left behind by customers using the self-storage areas, from filing cabinets to WEEE items, among others.
Gloucestershire firm receives £1.5m finance package
Refuse Vehicle Solutions has secured a £1.5 million finance package from HSBC UK to expand its business and meet “growing demand” from customers.

The company which supplies refuse collection and other vehicles, has used the funding to double its workshop capacity at the firm’s national hub in Dursley, Gloucestershire. In addition, five new service bays have been constructed, allowing the company to repair and maintain an increasing number of refuse fleets as it continues growing its customer base.
“We’re very excited to be expanding our service provision in Gloucestershire,” said Spencer Law, managing director of Refuse Vehicles Solutions. “We’re incredibly grateful to HSBC UK and our relationship manager, Jamie Lait, who have supported our ambitious business plans.”
David Butler, HSBC UK’s Area Director for Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, added: “Our funding has not only enabled the business to increase capacity but has also freed up cash which will be used to fulfil new and exciting contracts. We’re delighted to have supported the team at Refuse Vehicle Solutions for the last five years and look forward to seeing them reap the rewards of their growth.”
MRWA launches cardboard recycling campaign
MRWA’s cardboard recycling campaign
The Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority (MRWA) has recently launched a campaign with contract partner, Veolia, to prevent cardboard from ending up in landfill.
The ‘Clean up your Cardboard!’ programme will be rolled out to Merseyside residents in an attempt to increase their household recycling activities by ensuring items such as cardboard are recycled accordingly.
MRWA urges residents to remove materials such as bubble wrap, polystyrene packaging and old appliances from cardboard boxes, before flattening and bringing them to its recycling centres.
A statement from the authority read: “We don’t want people’s recycling efforts to be wasted. This is why we are asking members of the public to make sure their cardboard is clean, to remove any contents and to flatten boxes before being brought to their Recycling Centre.
“We accept cardboard at all 14 of our Household Waste Recycling Centres, however, cardboard with stains such as grease, food, paint and dirt cannot be recycled.”
Warrens Group acquires biomethane delivery vehicle
North East food waste recycling company, Warrens Group, has taken delivery of a Eurocargo Natural Power truck from manufacturer IVECO.
Warrens Group’s Eurocargo Natural Power truck will be in operation six days a week.
The newcomer will be used to power the company’s HGV waste collection vehicles with biogas converted directly from its food waste customers in order to reduce its carbon footprint.
Speaking of this in more detail, Warrens Group director, Antony Warren, said: “As a company, we pride ourselves on our forward-thinking, we’ve always been early adopters of the latest technology and methods. Our fundamental purpose is to collect waste and convert it into energy, so we’ve been looking for a biogas-powered vehicle for a while.”
The biomethane powered truck will be in operation six days a week, with refuelling carried out at Warrens Group’s facility at Newton Aycliffe.
