With news on: Mick George secures Cambridge police work; EMR enlists Bryland fire to install FAAST technology; and new fire detection company officially launches.
Fire and police services work for Mick George
Mick George has won a contract with Cambridgeshire Constabulary to provide waste and recycling services to 19 operating locations the force has across the county.
The 12-month agreement consists of 51 containers located across the various premises, which serve more than 2,600 members of staff. This will see weekly or fortnightly collection of general and recycled materials.
Stephen Hull at Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “Cambridgeshire Constabulary is pleased to announce the appointment of Mick George Recycling as a tier 1 supplier to carry out waste disposal and recycling services at all its sites throughout the county.”
Mick George has also secured a 12-month contract with the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which is the Cambridge Constabulary’s “collaborative partner”.
The Bedfordshire collection agreement consists of 35 containers located across the 14 premises, with scheduled weekly or fortnightly collections of general and recycled materials.
Kelly Hinkley, facilities supervisor at Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: The switch not only offered cost and efficiency savings to the Fire and Rescue Service but also means we are working with our collaborative partners, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cambridgeshire Constabulary.”
EMR enlists Bryland Fire to install FAAST technology
European Metal Recycling (EMR) enlisted fire protection company Bryland Fire to the company’s Oldbury depot to install new fire protection software.
The move saw the Fire Alarm Aspirating Sensing Technology XM (FAAST) technology installed, which “is designed to deliver highly accurate and early warning fire detection”.
The technology manufacturers – FAAST- say it has the highest levels of false alarm immunity and is the ideal solution for harsh, mission critical environments where “downtime is unacceptable and accuracy is critical”. This includes airports and hospitals.
The technology detects a wide variety of fires down to invisible concentrations of smoke, and uses an infrared laser to identify nuisances – such as dust – eliminating potential of false alarms and downtime.
The process of installing the FAAST technology saw five pipes installed along the roof line at the Oldbury depot, which is 18 metres at its apex.
David Mills, maintenance manager at EMR, commented: “Because of the vast quantities we recycle, our halls are huge with 18 metre high ceilings and equipped with bulky heavy plant and machinery, making them awkward from an installation perspective. So we had two problems to overcome; what system to use and how to install it.”
New fire detection company launches
A new fire detection and suppression system company has been launched for the waste and recycling industry in a bid “to improve services offered to the sector”.
FireShield Systems has been formed on the back of two engineers and directors joining forces to “offer a range of detection solutions and suppression mediums sourced from accredited manufacturers specialising in high risk applications relevant to the waste and recycling sector”.
Managing director Mark Bain and technical director Russell Bonnett have teamed up with engineering manager Andy Shaw and lead engineer Liam Sierota to create the company. The company explained that the concept came from waste and recycling operator Chris Mountain of Mid UK Recycling after his experience of other systems and services.
Mr Bonnett said: “The suitability of many of the systems being provided to waste and recycling businesses in the UK currently offers little choice for what is a vast range of materials and hazard scenarios. Many of the systems really aren’t up to the standard they need to be for this rapidly developing sector where available solutions have moved on from those typically specified by some insurers, consultants and other AHJ’s.”
To date the team at FireShield Systems has already worked with Mid UK, Warwick Ward, Case, Komatsu and Machtech Services.
