Mick George secures more work on A14

Cambridgeshire-based Mick George Ltd has won a further £1million agreement to supply skip and waste management service for the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme.

The project recently marked its first anniversary. With more than a quarter of the project’s main construction work now complete, using a 2,200-strong labour force which has completed 3 million hours worked to date, the company said there is a considerable volume of differing construction, trade and general waste materials being produced.

The project is said to be proactively looking at ways to minimise the impact of the scheme, “especially those that will positively influence environmentally”.

Mick George Ltd has committed to provide “complimentary containers for all waste metal materials produced, charging only for the haulage”.  Any proceeds gained from the sale of the recycled metals will go back to the scheme to become part of the A14 Community Fund, which supports local community projects, the company said.

LeedsBID and Forge team up

A new commercial waste and recycling collection service to be introduced in Leeds city centre aims to help save businesses money while enhancing street aesthetics.

LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District), working in partnership with Leeds-based Forge Recycling, is to deliver a new collection service to city centre businesses.

According to LeedsBID, the new service comes in response to a recent survey which showed that 43% of its levy payers wanted to see improvements to their collection contracts.

The contract, which is available to businesses who pay a BID levy, has been designed so that the more businesses which opt into the service, the more money they will all save, LeedsBID said. It is hoped that local businesses will work together to repeat the success of similar schemes elsewhere in the UK.

REPIC launches animation

REPIC has teamed up with primary school children to launch an animation to drive home the importance of disposing of used batteries responsibly.

The waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) producer compliance scheme, produced the animation, with help from 30 Year six children at Lowercroft Primary School in Bury, Manchester

The children’s hand-drawn designs were then brought to life in a two-minute video created by North West animation company, Kilogramme. A number of pupils were also invited to narrate the animation.

REPIC said its animation, which will be hosted on www.responsible-recycling.co.uk aims to educate children and their families on the importance – and best practice – of battery recycling.

RiverRidge takes delivery of Mercedes trucks

Northern Ireland waste management specialist, RiverRidge, has taken delivery of five new Mercedes-Benz Econics from MBNI Truck & Van.

The investment is part of a multimillion-pound deal to supply a number of vehicles over the next year to RiverRidge, and was facilitated through commercial vehicle hire firm, RentaMerc, the company said.

RiverRidge is based across four sites in Derry-Londonderry, Belfast, Coleraine and Portadown. With a fleet of over 145 vehicles and trailers, the new vehicles were required to replace some of the older fleet.

Tony Kirkpatrick, transport and logistics director of RiverRidge said: “These vehicles will add real value to our current fleet and will ensure that our exceptional operational ability continues to be sustained. We are delighted to be receiving these new five vehicles as part of larger deal with MBNI Truck & Van and RentaMerc.”

Amey receives diversity award

Amey has been awarded Leaders in Diversity status for its ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, the company has announced.

The Leaders in Diversity scheme is awarded by the National Centre for Diversity and helps organisations to achieve an inclusive culture.

The National Centre for Diversity surveyed over 1500 Amey employees as part of the assessment required for accreditation, in addition to interviewing the company’s senior leaders and suppliers.

James Haluch, Amey’s managing director for highways and the chair of its inclusion steering group, said: “We’ve made huge strides in recent years towards making Amey a more inclusive business to work for and to work with. This year alone, almost 2000 people managers have taken part in unconscious bias training and our diversity networks, including an established LGBTA network and a Women@Amey group, have grown to include over 800.

“This result a superb one for everyone involved in inclusion and diversity initiatives across the business.”
