MP visits Oxford recycling plant

Conservative MP Robert Courts has visited a construction materials recycling plant in Oxford, run by the Sheehan Group.

The water treatment facility is used to wash construction and demolition waste, destined for landfill, turning it into reusable aggregate, the company said.

In the past five years The Sheehan Group – a construction and recycling company – said it has saved 500,000 tonnes of waste from UK landfill sites via the plant. Half of the recycled material is used in its own construction projects and the rest is sold to contractors.

Mr Courts was joined by Nicholas Field-Johnson, head of development at Oxford University for a tour of the plant. Mr Field-Johnson joined Mr Court’s visit as part of the Sheehan Group’s relationship with Oxford University. The Sheehan Group has fully funded a scholar on the Master’s in Sustainable Urban Development course.

Hadfield supports trees project

Hadfield Wood Recyclers has announced it has chosen the Manchester City of Trees project as its Charity of the Year for 2018.

The national wood recycler is supporting a number of the charity’s initiatives this year including the Big Tree Count campaign, two Citizen Forester volunteering projects, a seminar about urban tree planting and its annual seminar.

The City of Trees charity was set up to restore underused woodland and planting a tree for every man, woman and child that lives in the city region, within a generation.

Its goals are:

  • 3 million trees planted, one for every man, woman and child across Greater Manchester
  • 2,000 hectares of unmanaged woodland brought back into use for the community
  • Connect people to the trees and woods around them

Hadfield Wood Recyclers has three sites in: Manchester, Essex and Middlesbrough.

Maxilead Metals announces export milestone

Lancashire-based scrap metal recycling firm, Maxilead Metals, has sent 11,000 tonnes of ferrous material to Singapore, India and Bangladesh since it developed its exporting initiative two and a half years ago.

The company said it collects and processes almost 60,000 tonnes of waste metal from homes and organisations around the UK every year, meaning that seven percent of Maxilead Metals’ material is now disposed of via export to these countries.

The firm expects the rise in demand for recycled steel to continue throughout 2018 as more people and businesses realise the monetary and environmental benefits to recycling scrap metal.

Maxilead Metals recently announced relocation plans to move from its 18.2 acre site in Lancashire to a larger piece of land three miles away. The company said this will allow it to expand on the back of a stream of national business wins, such as a Network Rail contract.

The social enterprise has been collecting unwanted furniture, white goods and other items from Oldham homes for the past 8 years on behalf of Oldham Council and have just won a new contract for a further 2 years. Bulky Bob’s said it works with local referral agencies to give away any suitable furniture to families in need and recycle as much of the rest as possible.

The social enterprise is now offering the collection service to local landlords and businesses. Bulky Bob’s has also launched a new office and commercial waste service, with confidential shredding and office recycling available.

Bulky Bob’s said it can collect up to three bulky or large items from homes for £17.43 with additional items at £8.20 each.

Oslo approaches food waste target with Envac

Oslo is on course to meets its 50% food waste recycling target, according to vacuum waste collection systems supplier Envac.

The Swedish firm reports that the latest survey by Agency for Waste Management, the city’s waste management department, revealed how the Norwegian capital is recycling 46.4 per cent – up from 34.8 per cent in 2010.

Envac’s Optibag technology is helping Oslo meet its 50 per cent food waste recycling target

The findings follow the City of Oslo’s decision in 2012 to make source sorting of food waste mandatory and work towards achieving 50% food waste recycling by 2018.

According to Envac, the Municipality of Oslo claims that much of its success is attributable to its citizens’ efforts to source sort their household waste and Envac’s Optibag system, which is part of the city’s waste collection strategy.

The system enables waste deposited in colour-coded bags to be automatically sorted at the end point using sophisticated optical sorting technology.

The company said the report also highlights how food waste recycling has increased from 33.3 per cent in 2012 when the City of Oslo’s first of two Envac Optibag sorting systems now in place became operational.
