Veolia encourages applications for Recycling Fund
Veolia is encouraging residents across South London to apply for its Recycling Fund for Communities.
Launched in 2017, the Recycling Fund for Communities is designed to support eco-friendly projects that “motivate people to do the right thing with their waste and create a lasting difference to local neighbourhoods,” the company said.
Eligible community projects could receive cash, resources or staff volunteers to help bring their ideas to life.
Veolia reports to be “doubling” the standard pledge of around £1,000, by offering a maximum offer of £2,000 for projects that demonstrate a positive impact on plastic waste. Veolia says the increase in funding for plastics reflects its “long standing investment in the plastic economy”.
Rachel Jay, community support manager for Veolia in London, said: “To make a real difference we need to work with communities, not just for them. Through our fund we aim to find Londoners who are passionate about protecting resources and their local environment, and empower them to realise their ideas.”
The project covers residents in Croydon, Merton and Sutton.
Powerday secures three year Saracens contract
London-based recycling company Powerday has extended its waste management contract with English rugby union side Saracens FC.
Powerday said it has been working with Saracens at their Allianz Park site since 2013, helping the club to achieve their aim of managing a sustainable state-of-the art stadium with zero waste going to landfill.
The new contract sees the relationship extended until 2021.
Richard Gregg, Allianz Park’s stadium director said: “Saracens are delighted to renew with Powerday, who have provided a first-class waste management service across our site and aligned with the club’s sustainability principles.”
Simon Little, sales and marketing director, added: “We are proud to have worked with Saracens since Allianz Park opened and are delighted to retain the contract.
#LeedsByExample to pilot ways of improving recycling rates
Behaviour change charity Hubbub and recycling compliance scheme Ecosurety have joined forces in a bid to improve the recycling of food and drink packaging disposed of on-the-go in Leeds.
Leeds By Example will see new recycling facilities introduced on the streets, in local offices, shopping centres, universities and transport hubs.
There will also be the first UK trial of an app developed by On Pack Recycling Label (OPRL), which will use on-pack barcodes to help people understand what and how to recycle, with a map to find their nearest recycling points, the organisations said.
The scheme will be piloted for six months in a bid to get more millennials to recycle, with some studies suggesting that age group is the least likely to do so, they explained.
Cllr Rafique, Leeds City Council executive board member for environment and active lifestyles said: “Improving recycling rates and changing behaviours to get people to think about what they are doing with their recyclable waste in Leeds is really important, and we are pleased to be part of this new and exciting trial.”
James Piper, managing director of Ecosurety, added: “Whilst recycling on-the-go can seem a complex issue to tackle, we believe that simple infrastructure improvements and clear communication could make a huge difference to recycling rates and to litter.”
Warwickshire council extends green points scheme
Warwickshire county council has extended its contract with Local Green Points to deliver its ‘Slim Your Bin’ campaign for another twelve months.
Slim Your Bin launched in November 2016 and aims to reward local “recycling champions” for reducing their waste and recycling.
Since its launch, over 560 residents have signed up and the campaign has received an ICiPS (Institute for Continuous Improvement in Public Services) award for its collaboration work to increase recycling in Warwickshire.
The campaign engages members, in a range of bin slimming activities to earn points.
Participants compete, both as individuals and as part of their borough or district, to earn the most points and win prizes.
Each month the three competitors who have earned the most points win a £20 voucher to spend on a choice of eco-friendly products or at popular high street retailers, the council said.
Councillor David Reilly, portfolio holder for environment and heritage and culture at Warwickshire County Council, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Local Green Points to provide the Slim Your Bin campaign for Warwickshire residents for another year. Slim Your Bin is a fun and exciting and way to engage residents in recycling and reward them for all their hard work.”
