Grundon releases Wimbledon recycling statistics
Waste management company Grundon has released statistics showing the results of its partnership with the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) at this year’s Wimbledon.

There was a 20% increase in the amount of mixed recycling collected at the tennis tournament, according to Grundon, and a 4.98% reduction in general waste collected and an increase of 8.22% in glass sent for recycling.
Shaun Workman, regional salesman at Grundon, said: “It was clear after The Championships 2018 that recycling and sustainability was an important talking point for the AELTC and we were extremely pleased to be part of those discussions.”
The tournament saw all waste 100% recycled or recovered, the launch of a team of so-called ‘Eco Champions’ to man recycling bins and promote recycling to visitors and the introduction of new recycling bins for plastic cups and coffee cups.
Daisie Goode, from the AELTC’s Sustainability Working Group, said: “Having our Eco Champions in place definitely made a big difference, as did visiting Grundon’s facilities, because it ensured everyone understood what they needed to do and were able to answer questions from the public.”
The AELTC says it will buy an equivalent weight of recycled paper and card to match the tonnage of paper cups sent for reprocessing.
Enva to double capacity of recycling facility
Recycling and resource recovery firm Enva has announced plans to double the capacity of its Newbridge recycling facility near Edinburgh.

The project will see a £1m investment in processing equipment and site infrastructure.
Enva’s managing director, Barry Coughlan, said: “This investment in recycling infrastructure demonstrates our commitment to the continued expansion of our business in and around Edinburgh.
“Providing customers with access to our latest recycling facility, we will ensure that they continue to receive a commercially and environmentally sustainable service for years to come.”
Enva hope to complete the development in early 2020 and say the facility will be capable of processing and recovering materials from a wide range of waste streams including construction, commercial, and municipal materials with the potential to operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
The development will also include an expansion of the site’s material storage areas and additional parking to support the expansion in the company’s fleet.
Eco Sustainable Solutions appoint accountants
Dorset-based Eco Sustainable Solutions has appointed the Bournemouth office of chartered accountants Saffery Champness LLP to manage its accounting and taxation affairs.

Eco Sustainable Solutions handles 340,000 tonnes of organic material each year across four facilities, including an anaerobic digestion plant at Piddlehinton, near Dorchester, and has held a contract with Dorset Waste Partnership to handle the county’s food, wood and green waste since 2008.
Jamie Lane, a partner at Saffery Champness, said: “We are incredibly proud to be working alongside such a well-known business that has been instrumental in the development of the local waste recycling strategy.

In recent years Eco Sustainable Solutions has concentrated more on renewable energy, transforming organic waste into biomass fuels.

Smurfit Kappa launch eco-friendly toys
Paper recycling specialist Smurfit Kappa has launched a range of eco-friendly toys made completely from paper.

The ekolife range of durable toys include planes, cars, jigsaws, build-your-own shops and castles.
Morgan Webster, general manager at ekolife, said: “Many parents we speak with feel guilty about buying more toys when they already have an attic or garage full of broken or unwanted plastic items that cannot be recycled.
“ekolife toys are designed to provide active and creative fun, encourage group play and at the end of their life, to go into a green bin.”
Every product will be made from cardboard and 100% recyclable, renewable and biodegradable.
Mr Websternoted: “This means that the toys will be recycled, leaving no trace behind, to become another product in the future – truly circular.”
