NHS Scotland to use Ditto for waste plan
Cloud-based learning and compliance provider, Ditto Sustainability, has been chosen to assist NHS Scotland with reducing waste and “stimulating” the Scottish circular economy through its artificial intelligence (AI) platform.
The decision was made after CivTech, a Scottish government digital offshoot, launched Challenge 6 – an initiative which aims to find an “efficient” and “robust” data system that will be used to monitor NHS resources; from first deployment through to return; as well as tracking them through the refurbishment processes to become “fully compliant”and ready for re-use.
“The project represents a considerable challenge due to the scale of NHS Scotland and the diversity of goods and services procured,” said Dan Botterill, CEO of Ditto Sustainability. “This was a huge attraction for us as a technology company. The lessons learned here will not only help NHS Scotland but help us to develop a platform approach relevant to any organisation, big, or small.”
Ditto Sustainability will work closely with NHS Scotland by utilising its AI platform to help reduce waste, provide cost savings where possible, while increasing the re-use of products, particularly with medical products issued to individuals in the public and private sector.
Reef Environmental invests to collect card and paper
Sussex shredding business Reef Environmental is launching what it describes as a ‘real recycling’ and waste collection service to businesses across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

Reef said it will collect materials such as cardboard and paper separately, to avoid cross contamination and optimise recycling. To do this, the company has taken a new RCV from Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) to facilitate the new service.
Paul Mintern, director, Reef Environmental said: “We are a total waste management company and decided that in order to provide the highest levels of customer service that we introduce our own commercial collection service. We’ve had onboard weighing equipment fitted to the vehicle, which means that our customers only pay for what they dispose of allowing us to offer a very competitive service.”
The refuse truck is a Euro 6 6×2 DAF, Dennis Olympus fitted with a Beta Trade Lift and the Enviroweigh Pay-by-Weight bin weighing system from VWS. Reef has taken the vehicle, an RVS RediTruck, on a 5-year contract hire agreement from RVS with repair and maintenance included.
Paul Brown, commercial director, RVS said: “We wish Paul and his team all the best with their new service and we are delighted they bought their first new refuse vehicle from RVS. We look forward to working with Reef Environmental, maintaining the vehicle and keeping it at its optimum.”
MGB bags host of awards
A leading manufacturer of wheeled bins and kitchen caddies, MGB Plastics, has secured two awards in recent months for its environmental credentials.
The Rotherham-based firm was awarded the ‘Best Environmental Energy Efficiency Programme’ award at the 2018 Plastic Industry Awards in September. And, the following month MGB bagged the ‘Environmental Commitment’ award at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards.
Now, the firm has also been shortlisted for two categories at the Sheffield Chamber Business awards for ‘Manufacturing Excellence’ and ‘High Business Growth’.
A spokesperson for MGB said: “At MGB we recognise the growing concerns around single use plastic consumption and so we are using our industry leading status to lead by example.
“To ensure customers never have to compromise with quality, we have invested heavily in a new material formulation […] to ensure industry recognised quality standards are not only met but greatly exceeded. This has been reflected through our performance in 2017 where we saw zero reported defects across our bins.”
Gap announces commercial food waste service
Gateshead-based waste management firm, Gap Group North East, will be expanding its food waste collection service to restaurants and manufacturers across the country.
GAP Group has agreed a contract with a business it owns to supply food waste
The firm said it has secured a long term supply agreement with a food waste anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Gateshead.
The plant is currently in construction, with operations due to commence in late 2019.
It will be owned by Gap Group and its subdivision GAP Organics. Gap also has arrangements with a number of local AD plants to supply packaged and non-packaged food waste.
Peter Young, operations director at Gap said: “GAP Waste are extremely pleased to have been awarded this new contract, which complements our existing service offering throughout the waste sector.
“As a company, we will continue to invest to ensure the North East has the infrastructure it needs to process the waste we generate as well as help companies nationally improve their waste strategy.”
The group says it is one of the largest collector and processor of electrical waste within the North. Gap also has its own haulage division.
Go Plant Fleet Services extends Matlock premises
Go Plant Fleet Services has opened a refurbishment centre for specialist commercial vehicles at its Matlock site in Derbyshire.
The refurbishment centre will cater for a range of waste management and recycling vehicles.
The expansion follows on from the company’s acquisition of family-run Harprule Hire in August, which closed its operations earlier this year.
The service will include the modification, refurbishment and repair of refuse trucks, recycling vehicles and cage tippers for third party customers. The premises will also be used as an operations and maintenance hub for the company’s spot hire division.
Matt Townsend, a former employee of Harprule Hire, has joined the business as operations manager.
Mark Gallimore, commercial director at Go Plant Fleet Services, added: “The site is ideally located for our first refurbishment centre, but will also act as a central hub for our owned spot hire division, which is a key focus for the business in the coming months.”
