LondonWaste morphs into LondonEnergy

By 05/09/2017News

North London Waste Authority’s (NLWA) waste management contractor LondonWaste has announced it is rebranding to LondonEnergy as it prepares to build a ‘bigger’ energy recovery facility at its Edmonton site.

The newly christened LondonEnergy also has a new strapline ‘Powering the circular economy’ to “recognise” its position as North London’s leading producer of sustainable energy, said the company.

(l-r) Councillor Clyde Loakes, chair of NLWA and Peter Sharpe, LondonEnergy’s managing director, at the rebranding event.

Commenting on the rebrand today (5 September), LondonEnergy’s managing director, Peter Sharpe said: “The rapidly developing sustainable energy and secondary resources markets make it an exciting time for LondonEnergy and the communities that we serve.

“We are transforming from a traditional waste management business into an energy, recycling and resource management business and this rebranding better reflects the current and future activities of the company.”

Bigger EcoPark

LondonEnergy manages household waste from over 1.9 million residents across seven north London boroughs and its Edmonton, EcoPark, is one of the largest ‘energy from waste’ producers in the UK.

Earlier this year, the NLWA announced it had received the go-ahead from the government to build a replacement energy recovery facility at the EcoPark (see letsrecycle.com story).

Speaking at the rebranding event, Cllr Clyde Loakes, chair of NLWA, said the new facility will have “marginally bigger capacity” and will replace the current plant in 2027.

But Cllr Loakes noted that the Authority expected the current plant would last until 2025 – potentially leaving a two year gap.

Responding to this, Cllr Loakes said: “We are working on filling the gap, whether that means bringing the new site forward or getting the current kit to run for longer.”

Recycling

Currently, about 50% to 60% of the seven boroughs waste is being turned into energy at the facility. Every year LondonEnergy diverts more than 698,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.

When asked if recycling was being squeezed out by EfW in north London, Cllr Loakes said: “We are the second largest Energy from Waste producers in the UK. This presents complex challenges, interesting logistics with different collection streams… And we have to respond to this.”

Cllr Loakes added that the new facility might deal with less waste as recycling was something they “concentrated on”, with an emphasis of “encouraging more people to recycle”.
