North Lincs deputy chief assists with bin collections
Simon Green, deputy chief executive of North Lincolnshire council, took to the streets of Scunthorpe on 6 September to help empty residents’ bins.
Mr Green accompanied three waste operators on their normal round to empty general waste bins to understand the challenges and pressures they face on a day-to-day basis, and also to see whether any improvements could be made.
The crew consisted of Tom Malkin (driver), Callum Robinson and Craig Millward – all waste operatives at North Lincolnshire Council.
The team collected rubbish from 1,297 properties including 37 assisted collections (where the team retrieved bins from elderly/vulnerable residents’ properties). In addition, they gathered around 25 tonnes of household waste from green bins.
Speaking of his experience, Mr Green said: “It was really interesting to talk to Tom, Callum and Craig, to get a feel for what they do and hear about the various things they have to consider when emptying residents bins, such as weight restrictions down some roads which adds time onto the journey.”
He added: “I was particularly keen to talk to them as they are relative new, having worked for the council less than a year, so it was interesting to hear their perspective of the job.”
Tom Malkin, waste operative and driver out on the round in Scunthorpe this morning, said:“It was good to have Simon join us and show an interest in the work we do. It gave us the opportunity to explain the role and what is involved in the job. Thursday and Friday tends to be the busiest day for the crews so today was a good day for Simon to join us.”
Stockport council launches recycling campaign
Stockport council has introduced its ‘We Love Stockport – Be Proud of Where You Live,’ initiative, designed to help residents increase their recycling activities.
The campaign has also “sparked” a new generation of recyclers, who have started doing their part both for their community and the environment.
Local residents Ella and Abbie from Reddish are “passionate” about keeping the planet “clean and green”, which has resulted in them becoming the new faces of the council’s campaign.
To raise awareness of recycling, both Ella and Abbie, along with some of the local residents, will be seen across the authority’s newly branded bin wagons in Stockport.
Cllr Sheila Bailey Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “I would like to thank Abbie and her sister Ella for getting involved in our campaign and helping their mum to recycle. It is important for future generations that we recycle as much as possible to benefit our communities and help our environment.”
Speaking of her appointment, Abbie commented: “I help my mum and dad around the house by finding things that need recycling. I learnt that egg shells, plastic bottles and toilet rolls can all be recycled. Recycling is important because we need to help our planet for when me and my sister grow up.”

WRAP to urge recycling uptake
Waste charity, WRAP, has released more details to local authorities about Recycling Week, which will take place between 24-30 September 2018.
Organised by Wrap, this year’s theme, ‘Recycling. We do. Because it matters,’ aims to encourage more households to recycle, by demonstrating the advantages of recycling items from around the home.
The theme is designed to raise awareness and put messages across to explain why recycling is essential in this day and age. To facilitate this, Wrap partners will also have the opportunity to “bust myths” and demonstrate why recycling is beneficial to households and the environment.
A statement from Wrap said: “Recycle Week is fast approaching and it’s great to hear that lots of local authorities, retailers and brands are gearing up to support it. With plastics and recycling firmly in the spotlight, this year’s Recycle Week promises to be bigger and better than ever.
“A huge 8m ‘WE DO’ sign has recently toured the country, being photographed at iconic buildings and landscapes that represent the UK. These photos will form the basis of an out of home billboard advertising campaign and a large scale digital campaign during Recycle Week highlighting that ‘WE DO’ recycle as a nation.”
