Attendees and exhibitors are gearing up for the 2019 LARAC Conference, due to be held near Birmingham this week (2 and 3 October).
The event will see more than 400 delegates hear from experts drawn from across the waste and recycling sector. Keynotes, seminars and hands-on workshops will provide the opportunity for local authority officers to share best practise and update their industry knowledge.
LARAC 2019 will take place this week at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole
Baroness Catherine Bakewell of Hardington and Mandeville will open the conference on Tuesday at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, near the NEC. As the Liberal Democrat’s House of Lords’ spokesperson for environment, food and rural affairs, Baroness Bakewell draws upon her parliamentary work on environmental issues, as well as a long career as a local councillor in Somerset.
Later Chris Preston, deputy director waste and recycling at Defra, will provide an important briefing on the government’s Resources and Waste Strategy and the upcoming Environment Bill.

Over the course of the two-day event workshops will cover topics as wide ranging as taking waste services in-house, keeping recycling out of landfill and introducing food waste collections. Fly-tipping will be tackled and commercial waste solutions for local authorities will be discussed, amongst a plethora of other issues.

This year attendees are also encouraged to bring pre-loved hats, gloves and scarves to the event to be donated to WRAP UP London, the LARAC Conference’s partner charity. By donating clothes attendees can re-use textiles and help homeless people, refugees, children living in poverty, people fleeing domestic violence and others in crisis supported by charities.
With the help of generous donations, this year’s conference hopes to create a mountain of warm clothing to offer to those in need.

Celebration awards
The LARAC Conference will also offer the chance for attendees to recognise the achievements of local authority recycling officers and their colleagues at the annual LARAC Celebration awards – the only dedicated awards for waste and recycling officers.
The glittering awards ceremony takes place on the evening of the 2 October, when winners will be announced.
Finalists and winners of the 2018 LARAC Awards
From titles for Best Partnership and Best Team to prizes highlighting waste minimisation projects and communications, the evening event offers the chance to showcase innovative recycling work within councils across the country.
Over 15 local authorities and individuals have been named as finalists for the awards, across the six award categories.
