Kingston council has rolled out the ‘Kingston Recycling Rewards’ scheme, which aims to reduce non-recyclable waste produced in the borough, to residents in flats.
The scheme, provided by the rewards provider Local Green Points, will tackle household waste by rewarding residents with prizes and discounts at local businesses for wasting less and recycling more.

According to Local Green Points, the scheme is targeted at residents who live in the borough’s 15,000 purpose built flats and will reward them for their recycling efforts. Residents will be able to win monthly cash prizes and help decide which local charities win a share of a £4,750 donation fund.

The scheme aims to reduce the £3 million a year it costs the council to process non-recyclable waste, the rewards provider said. It follows the roll out of a new recycling system for the borough’s flats, with new blue (paper and cardboard), green (cans, glass and plastics) and brown (food waste) bins for each block.
Kingston Recycling Rewards will launch with teams of door-to-door recycling advisors visiting residents, explaining how the scheme works and helping them activate their accounts.
Once signed up to the scheme, residents will be able to report their weekly recycling and take part in online modules informing them how to cut down their household waste. Recycling and waste tonnages will be measured quarterly and residents who waste less and recycle more will earn ‘Green Points’ for their community.
Every month, residents will be eligible to win high street vouchers, such as M&S, iTunes, B&Q and Odeon Cinema vouchers. The local charities supported by the scheme are Kingston Women’s Centre, EnhanceAble, Express CIC, Anstee Bridge and Love Kingston.

Discounts
Participating residents will also receive a recycling rewards card, entitling them to discounts at over 60 local businesses signed up to the scheme.
