An investigation is underway into the death of a council worker who was killed in an incident involving a refuse collection vehicle he was working from in Limavady, Northern Ireland earlier this week.
The Ambulance Service confirmed it attended the scene on Tuesday (6 November) following reports of a “road traffic collision” involving a pedestrian at around 7.30am.
The man, who has been named locally as John Winton, worked for Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, and was also an on-call firefighter.
The vehicle is liveried as A Miller Commercials which is understood to hold the recycling contract for the local authority.
An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of the incident, the council confirmed.
Fire Service
In a statement, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service’s (NIFRS) chief Fire & rescue officer, Gary Thompson said he was “devastated” to learn of the death of his colleague, who died in an “off-duty incident”.
“John was a Retained Firefighter at Limavady Fire Station, having joined NIFRS almost 2 years ago on 19 November 2016,” Mr Thompson said.
“On behalf of NIFRS, I extend our sincere sympathies and condolences to John’s family, his mother Margaret and his children Lisa and Gavin, at this difficult time,” he added.
Following the incident, the Mayor Councillor Brenda Chivers offered her condolences on behalf of Council. She said: “It is with deep sadness that we learned this morning of the death of a colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s family and friends and we offer them our heartfelt sympathies at this time.”
Firefighters from Limavady Fire Station and neighbouring Stations of Dungiven and Crescent Link attended the incident, along with two emergency ambulances, and the Police.
