A pre-inquest review into a fatality at skip hire company All Waste Berkshire, trading as Tanners Recycling, took place today (3 September) at Reading Town Hall.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recorded in 2017 the death of John Thomas Tanner, aged 62, who died after being “struck by an object” on 6 October 2017 in Slough.
The pre-inquest review today was heard by assistant coroner Alison McCormick, of Berkshire Coroner’s Office, with family members of Mr Tanner present.
CCTV
The circumstances of Mr Tanner’s death were caught on CCTV and Ms McCormick said the footage would be shown at the inquest. She acknowledged that the deceased’s family members might find this distressing.
Ms McCormick described the time that had elapsed since Mr Tanner’s death as “very hard” on his family.
Members of Mr Tanner’s family, including Lorraine Tanner, a former secretary at All Waste, sat listening impassively to Ms McCormick as she provisionally scheduled the inquest to take place during the week beginning 22 March 2021. Ms McCormick said she believed the inquest would take between two and four days to complete.
The HSE is to contribute evidence to the inquest and has already submitted a report on the incident to the court.
Covid-19
Restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic were in place at Reading Town Hall, meaning only 16 people were allowed into the Coroner’s Court. Fewer than that attended the pre-inquest review.
Ms McCormick said March 2021 was the earliest the inquest could take place due to the Covid-19 restrictions and a build-up of cases. She added this date could be pushed back were the situation to worsen.
Ms McCormick said she wanted the inquest to be able to take place with a full jury of 11 people.
