An inquest has been opened into the death of a Sunderland-based man whose body was found at a recycling plant last month, and the HSE is now involved.
28-year-old Jay McLaren, according to Northumbria Police, was last seen shortly after 04:00 on December 23. Local media suggest that Mr McLaren is likely to have sought to sleep in the bin after a night out on what was a cold night.
The incident occurred in Houghton le Spring, seven miles south west of Sunderland.
It is understood that Mr McLaren’s body was later found at a transfer station and recycling site in Houghton le Spring (seven miles south west of Sunderland), belonging to Max Recycle, a brand of The Durham Company Ltd.
His inquest was officially opened and adjourned at the Sunderland’s Coroner’s Court on Friday 5 January. A spokesperson from the Coroner’s Court said: “I can confirm that the formal inquest into the death of Jay McLaren was opened and at this stage is adjourned while enquiries continue.”
The case has been adjourned until 21 June as Mr McLaren’s death was confirmed to be “unnatural”.

Earlier this week, the HSE told letsrecycle.com that it is “aware of the incident and inspectors have attended the site with Northumbria Police officers.”
The spokesperson added: “We are continuing to assist them with their enquiries.”

In a statement soon after the incident, Northumbria Police said that while “it is believed there was no third party involvement, we are seeking information from the public to help trace Mr McLaren’s last movements”.
According to the company’s website, Max Recycle is “the largest private collector of trade waste in North East England, North West England & Southern Scotland”. Letsrecycle.com has contacted a Max Recycle for a comment.
