IFAT show attracts UK interest

By 16/02/2018News

More than 3,100 exhibitors from over 50 countries will feature at the IFAT 2018 conference and trade fair for environmental technologies, which this year is being held in Munich.

IFAT 2018 will take place from May 14 to 18 at Munich’s exhibition centre. Exhibitors will demonstrate state of the art equipment in waste and raw materials management, including plastic and wood recycling.

IFAT will be held at the Munich exhibition halls

A number of UK waste and recycling businesses have told letsrecycle.com that they are sending representatives to Munich to visit the show.

Expanded by two additional halls, this year’s IFAT will feature a demonstration from Doppstadt, a manufacturer of recycling machinery.  This includes the “Inventhor Type 9”, the company’s most powerful shredder for biomass and waste.

There will also be a range of other equipment on show which safely removes dust emissions from the air. Including in this is a demonstration from Donaldson Filtration, which will demonstrate its PowerCore CPC Series dust collectors at IFAT 2018. They are equipped with filter packs, which, according to the company, do not only clean reliably and last long, but also allow quick and easy filter exchange.

Plastics sorting

The show organisers have highlighted the plastics sorting equipment which will be on show. They note that PVC, bio-based and agricultural films share one characteristic: “they are hard to sort automatically”.

The reflect that in German firm Steinert’s experience, the films lift off from the conveyor belts of conventional sorting units, “fly about and cannot be reliably detected by the camera systems2. Hence, the company from Cologne, Germany has developed the sorting machine UniSort Film, which will be presented at IFAT. Above the conveyor belt, the machine has a “calming tunnel”, which produces a gentle airflow just strong enough to press the plastic films down to the belt and hold them in place. As a result, it is claimed that recycling companies are able to work with conveyor speeds of up to five metres per second and increase the sorting throughput. A light illuminates the conveyor belt and the light is reflected to a near-infrared (NIR) camera, for a software to analyse the spectrum and thus identify the type of plastic. According to Steinert, this system allows to sort several tons of plastics per hour fully automatically—with a success rate of up to 99 %.

Safety

Several demonstrations to reduce occupational health risks will also be on show. This year’s IFAT presentation will focus on occupational safety of refuse collectors during waste collection.

Zöller-Kipper will be demonstrating  its ‘ Clean Option system’, which is installed on rear-end loaded refuse collection vehicles and consists of filter elements for coarse and fine dust as well as an activated carbon element to eliminate odours.

As the industry platform for innovations, attending IFAT as a trade visitor will give you the chance to meet with the entire industry—ranging from a system provider operating on a global scale to highly specialized medium-sized enterprises.

There will also be talks by specialists, podium discussions, and company presentations. More than 135,000 attendees are expected from 168 countries.
