This week waste management firm Grundon has said it is highlighting “its commitment to the NHS” by launching a series of activities designed to help reduce waste and keep costs down, while also celebrating achievement and success in the health service. The actions tie in with NHS Sustainability Day on 22 March.
On Wednesday (21 March) Grundon, in conjunction with letsrecycle.com, is presenting a webinar entitled ‘Driving sustainability and reducing costs in the NHS through effective waste management’.
The hour-long webinar, which starts at 1.oo pm, will hear from a panel of experts as they discuss best practice ideas and innovations in healthcare waste management and look at ways of helping NHS trusts to reach sustainability targets while also reducing costs.
Taking part are: Dr Anne Woolridge, technical director, Independent Safety Services; Richard Hilson, head of sustainability, Frimley Heath NHS Foundation Trust; and Grundon’s Phil Steer, commercial manager – clinical.
Commitment
Speaking ahead of the event, Mr Steer said: “We take our commitment to driving sustainability in the NHS very seriously, as evidenced by our many successes for organisations such as London North West Healthcare (LNWH) NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
“By working closely together with our NHS colleagues, we have delivered real change, such as improved segregation and diversion of waste from landfill and increased the quality of materials being segregated ready for reprocessing and recycling. We’ve introduced new services such as food waste collections, and we’ve helped cut CO2 emissions by optimising collection schedules.
“These are just a snapshot of our achievements and this webinar gives us the opportunity to share those experiences and help others to learn from our expertise and that of my fellow panel members.”
Topics for the webinar will include:
- how to reduce waste sent for high temperature incineration
- how to increase recycling rates, with a special focus on recovery of items such as plastics, lighting and lamps
- how to align procedures and best practice across different sites
- how to improve connections between waste, procurement and services in order to cut the amount of waste being produced
More details on the webinar can be found at Register and it will also be available afterwards as a recording.
Sustainability
NHS Sustainability Day, which takes place the following day on 22 March.
Described as a national day of action across the health sector, it sees NHS Trusts, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Hospitals and organisations take action to highlight the important role sustainable development can play in health service delivery.
Completing the week’s activities, on Friday, 23 March, Grundon is sponsoring the category for Volunteer of the Year in the London North West Healthcare (LNWH) NHS Trust Staff Excellence Awards.
Now in their fourth year, the Staff Excellence Awards recognise and celebrate the vital contribution that LNWH colleagues make to the Trust, from every walk of hospital and community life. Nominations are received from staff, patients and the public, culminating in an awards ceremony at The Hilton Hotel in Wembley.
And Grundon is supporting the NHS Sustainability Awards. The awards take place on 17 May, at the Marriot Hotel, Regents Park, London.
