Norwegian-owned waste fuel specialist, Geminor, has signed a 25-year contract to supply Amey’s Allerton Waste Recovery Park in North Yorkshire.
The agreement will see Geminor supply a maximum of 50,000 tonnes of residual waste per annum to the energy-from-waste (EfW) facility.

The ‘state-of-the-art’ facility, which opened earlier this year, is capable of turning 320,000 tonnes of ‘black sack’ rubbish into 28MwH of renewable electricity every year.
As a result of the contract award, Geminor will be providing more than 20% of feedstock for the plant.
Partnership
Working in partnership with North Yorkshire county council and the City of York council, Allerton Waste Recovery Park aims to reduce household waste sent to landfill by 90%, Amey said.
Amey will operate the facility on behalf of both councils for the next 25 years.
According to the company, the facility was desinged to meet the waste management needs of North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council for the contract period, with some capacity for third party waste. “Therefore the procurement and financial model were designed to allow for contracts such as the one with Geminor,” a spokesperson for Amey confirmed.
Commenting on the contract award, Jon Callaghan, business director at Amey, said: “With the help of Geminor, we are diverting waste away from landfill and, instead of it being exported, it is now being treated to produce sustainable energy in the UK. Geminor was chosen as our new supplier due to the company’s extensive supply network and logistics provision.
“Council targets mean that we must divert biodegradable waste from landfill, which makes this new facility an instrumental part of waste management infrastructure,” he added.

Geminor reports to hold supply contracts with more than 70 waste-to-energy facilities across Europe and is budgeting to manage 1.4 million tonnes of waste material for 2018.
Last August, the company secured a “major contract” with Hull city council to manage municipal solid waste.
As part of the deal, Geminor will supply refuse derived fuel to the Energy Works (Hull) Ltd gasification facility, which is due to become operational this year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Allerton Waste Recovery Park was declared fully operational earlier this year (see letsrecycle.com story).
The facility combines three “state-of-the-art” technologies on one site – mechanical treatment, anaerobic digestion and EfW.
