Geminor partners with Lowmac on RDF deal

By 19/02/2018News

Norwegian-owned secondary fuels specialist, Geminor, is working in partnership with Lowmac Alloys Ltd in Ayrshire to export 25,000 tonnes of baled refuse derived fuel (RDF) to Norway.

The agreement, which commences this month, will see Geminor manage the export supply chain – including port to port shipment, storage and on-demand recovery.

A Liebherr 550 at the Lowmac site

Lowmac is a Scottish waste management firm, headquartered in Irvine. The 11 acre site handles around 135,000 tpa of waste and recyclables, producing RDF. The company also recently purchased the former Energos site at Irvine (see letsrecycle.com story).

From Lowmac’s headquarters, RDF will be transported to Immingham Docks in Hull. Utilising ‘dead leg’ sea freight, whereby empty cargo vessels are filled with waste material to provide ballast for their return journey, bales will cross the North Sea and arrive at the Port of Fredrikstad in Norway.

Logistics terminal

RDF will then be sorted at Geminor’s new multimodal logistics terminal, located on site at the port, before being distributed to one of Norway’s three leading energy recovery plants, Geminor reports.

The capability to store RDF allows a consistent supply of on-demand feedstock to these sites, even at peak times, Geminor says.

Over the course of the contract, waste from Lowmac Alloys will be effectively recovered to generate more than 71 GWh energy per annum – comprising 36 GWh steam to industry and 35 GWh to district heating.

By managing the entire supply chain, Geminor said it will not only maximise transport efficiencies and minimise costs but also ensure waste is used as a sustainable fuel where it is needed most.

Commenting on the contract, Oliver Caunce, business development manager at Geminor UK, said: “As the latest in a long line of UK supply successes for Geminor, agreeing an export contract with Lowmac Alloys is yet more exciting news.

EfW

“This contract, among others, will play a vital role in our ongoing expansion across Norway, while supporting EfW facilities in times of fluctuating fuel requirements.”

“Over the next 12 months alone, we will export more than 120,000 tonnes of RDF feedstock from the UK to our new terminal at the Port of Fredrikstad, recovering waste at the Bio-El, Energos and SAE AS energy from waste (EfW) facilities.”

Kenny Smith, managing director of Lowmac Alloys Ltd, added: “We are delighted to be working alongside such a forward-thinking company. Through this partnership, we are delivering a sustainable route for our RDF product.”

Before Christmas, letsrecycle.com reported that Geminor had won a contract to supply more than 27,000 tonnes of RDF to the Renova energy from waste facility in Gothenburg, Sweden (see letsrecycle.com story).
