Fire crews attend Viridor’s Beddington facility

By 11/07/2019News

A fire has broken out in a waste transfer station at Viridor’s Energy from Waste (EfW) plant in Beddington, south London this morning (11 July).

According to the London Fire Brigade four fire engines and around 25 firefighters are at the scene of the fire, which was first reported at 10:23 in a single-story building.

“Multiple calls have been received about the fire, where a large amount of rubbish and a single story building is alight,” the London Fire Brigade said.

In a statement, Viridor explained that waste deliveries are being diverted as a result of the “small fire.”

“Viridor can confirm a small fire was reported at its Beddington Lane transfer station in Sutton, South London, today at 10.45am. The London Fire Service is on site and is managing the fire. There were no injuries and no risk to public health and the EA [Environment Agency] has been informed,” the statement said.

Viridor added: “The cause of the fire has not been identified but waste site operators know that it is most likely attributed to lithium ion batteries. These batteries are the main cause of waste site fires. They are commonly found in a variety of products, including mobile phones, toys, cameras, eCigarettes and laptop computers. Viridor asks people to responsibly dispose of these batteries at household waste recycling centres.”

The transfer station is located on a site which also houses the 275,000 tonnes per year energy from waste plant, built to service the company’s contract with the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP).

UPDATE:

London Fire Brigade has issued a further update at 14:10 stating that crews “remain at the scene” of the fire and a “single story building containing rubbish is still alight”.
